I followed the directions in viewtopic.php?f=5&t=164&st=0&sk=t&sd=a&start=10#p1177, and everything seemed to go well. However, when I rebooted, when the Ubuntu logo screen comes up, the orange bar never shows up, and it just goes to a blank screen with a blinking cursor.

Before the Ubuntu screen, I can't make out what flashed on the screen. I just caught "FATAL" ...

My system is Ubuntu Remix + Sickboy's kernel.

Can I save my system, or do I have to reinstall?

Well, I always see the word FATAL very shortly too when I start Ubuntu, but after that everything seems to work fine. So there is a chance that you can still save your system.

When booting from recovery mode, the system shows

    Did not find /root/bin

It then pauses for 2s and tries, over and over again.
I tried editing the /etc/fstab and grub/menu.lst with the UUID of the drive, and that didn't work either =(
