ok, im not technically a noob because ive had my laptop a while and so ive gotten a little used to it, anyway, what i was wondering is, can i put fedora on my laptop? i know the linpus lite is a derivative of fedora but i want the actual fedora if i can put it on, do all the features of my laptop still work and how do i actually put it on? <-- (why this is on the newbie forum, im a noob when it comes to this lol, a big noob XD)
There are already a lot of information about fedora in this forum. See http://aspireoneuser.com/forum/viewtopi ... 71&t=12422 and http://aspireoneuser.com/forum/viewtopi ... 71&t=12902. I would suggest to check Fedora 11 most of the hardware works without tweaks see http://aspireoneuser.com/forum/viewtopi ... =10#p88182 (and the final release is not out). Grtz,
so if i install it, will i lose all my programs and files? just wanna know before i do any updating lol
Installing F11 from a live cd (or usb stick) will overwrite the partition into which it is installed, wiping whatever was there. If there's stuff I want to keep, I put it on a separate partition that doesn't get touched by the F11 installation. In practice, this means I keep my data but have to reinstall the programs. HTH
ive got another option im considering now, xubuntu, iv heard it might be a bit better with it being specially for netbooks does all the hardware of teh aspire one work with xubuntu? and if not, would there be a fix to the things that dont?
From my experience, all the hardware that works with (what will be) Fedora 11 also works with the various Ubuntu 9.04 variants and vice-versa.
I don't think xubuntu is specifically built for netbooks. It uses XFCE which is more lighweight than a Gnome or a KDE. I think you should look for the distributions you like more by considering the differences. For example yum againt apt, ... Then XFCE is always available... Grtz
is yum not available with xubuntu then? im sorry i keep asking about them but i cant seem to find like a list of whats in them
xubuntu is ubuntu + xfce so it is based on debian and uses apt not yum. fedora is sponsored by redhat and uses yum. http://polishlinux.org/choose/compariso ... ro2=Fedora Grtz,
ohh ok ill still use ubuntu because it supports a game i wanna play haha, possibly the wrong reasons for my choice but oh well, i like trying new things, plus ubuntu is more popular ive heard so i could get more support should i need it ok thanks for the help guys ^_^
I think this is the actually the right reason to choose a distro - select one that supports the software you want to use.
oh cool lol, i made a good choice for once with xubuntu, when i install it (a bit later), would i have to install a certain program to make my wireless card work and be able to connect?
Xubuntu is just Ubuntu with the XFCE desktop instead of GNOME. If you want that interface and already have Ubuntu installed, just install the XFCE components. You can always delete the GNOME bits that XFCE doesn't need once you have XFCE up and running.
never mind i now have xubuntu installed and it works perfectly, better even linpus lite had a tendency to mess around -.-, like programs kept opening and closing for no reason
