I am overwhelmed by the help I am being given. Thanks a lot.
Did my AltF2 after machine up, entered a password and did the add remove bit and installed the Printer Drivers Package.
Went to Settings - Printer - New Printer and selected Canon.
Was presented with the same list of printers I initially had at the start of my Query - no PIXMA iP4200.
    Thanks again
    Steve

    Hi steve48

The following is a screenshot from my AA0 of the Printer list under Canon on the Gutenprint software. You will see the printer you are after. Did you scroll down far enough? Can you also check that you have the Gutenprint-cups package installed.

    Hi solpuerto
When I went to the add/remove, I entered gutenprint in the search tab, then highlighted the Printer Driver Packages and hit Apply.
    The job completed.
Since reading your last note, I also highlighted the cups bit and hit Apply.
There are no new files in My Downloads, as I expect there should be.
Perhaps that explains why the iP4200 still ain't there on Settings!
I'm still doing something wrong or missing a step.
I'm afraid all this is new to me so things are far from obvious.
    Thanks for your time.
    Steve

    Hi steve

The file will not be in Downloads.
I assume you have activated the right click to bring up a menu on screen, if so select "Settings" and then Printing. Then click on New Printer.
Select Forward and you should see a list of printer manufacturers including Canon. Under Canon you will find your printer.
If I am missing something let me know.

    Hi solpuerto
Yes, right click is very productive!
However, Settings then Printer from right click gives me the same reduced Canon list as Settings Printer does when accessed from the bottom right of the desktop screen.
I am not getting the extended list that you show a part of in your screen printout.
My list includes a load of BJC-xxx printers, then a few LBP-xxx and a few others as it did when I started off on this badventure.
The gutenprint Printer Driver Package and Cups bit which were applied from the add/remove action did has not changed the situation.
Sorry to be such a pain. I can imagine how frustrating it must be for you.
    Cheers, and thanks again
    Steve

    Hi steve48

It appears to me that the gutenprint drivers are not installed, can you check that you get the following screen, please note the "Installed Packages" is ticked. If you do get this screen check the drivers on mine are identical to yours.
If they are I am rather at a loss as to why I can find your printer but you do not.

    EDIT
Been thinking and I wonder if it is anything to do with out of date Fedora Repositories. They do contain updates for CUPS drivers.
Enter the following in Terminal. Linpus is based on Fedora.

    sudo yum install fedora-release

Here is a link to Mackles Blogspot for an explanation.

    Hi solpuerto

........................................and what a wonderful day it is !!!!!

Went to add/remove and Removed the two gutenprint files, Printer Driver Package and Cups. They were added individually - should not be relevant, but there it is.
Added them in again as a pair and guess what - when I went to add printer, the dear old PIXMA iP4200 was there to be selected.
It was selected and a trial print gave me A4. Can keep my stock of paper now and not have to cut it in half to produce A5 sheets!
Thank you very much indeed for your help and perseverance in helping me get in gear and thanks also to barrie and kapinouwi for their help as well.
The sun is not shining, but who cares!
    All the best

    Steve

    Hi steve48

As a certain TV programme used to say "It's great when a plan comes together"

Glad it all worked at last.

    Best wishes

Hi there- one from another new user / complete beginner.
On first use of the machine i was asked to enter a password- what is this for?.
Can someone provide a verry simple guide to the differing passwords issue. From a search of topics it appears that others have experienced that the machine simply turns on with no log on screen- so what is the password for.
Seen some other threads about creating a log on screen i think, and or creating a bios password as though these would be viable wise security improvements but honestly cant follow the instructions. I'm sure lots of new users would like a simple guide on the simplest solution.
Also coming from a desktop environment XP but Firefox3 as browser - can one capture the bookmarks via Export and then transfer them into the Browser2 on the AA1 (import in)??
    All advice gratefully received.

    Hi derek

The password you entered is known as the "Root" password and is part of the security of Linux. Any meaningful changes to your system folders can only be carried out by Root and will require the password you entered when setting the One up. There is an example of when it is required in the previous posts about Printer Drivers where the password was required before Add/Remove software functionality could be activated.
Also you will come across reference to using "Terminal", this is where Linux code is entered and may require use of the Root password before code can be activated.
Many of the folders in File System are for Root use only and to do anything with them you will need to use the password.
If you look at a standard Documents folder and its Properties you will see a Tab called permissions. On this folder the Owner is User i.e. you not root therefore you can add/remove data from this folder.
If you only ever use the standard functionality of the Acer desktop you are unlikely to use Root and it is normal for the system to boot with no password required.

    Hope that helps a bit.

First thing I did was go over some of the printed instructions off the net and setup my email, chat clients, try some of the 10 things to do with a new aspire. I'm a bit concerned over changing to firefox 3 since firefox 2 works just fine. Not going to try it until I backup the SSD somehow. Lots of reading to do before trying more ambitious things.
How do I format usb hard drives/usb sticks for linpus?
Bought a 16 Gb SDHC card on sale at Future Shop for same price as an 8GB. Not sure if it will work because the manual only says SD cards work but the forums say the SDHC cards work. Hope so.
time to go read more new stuff on the forums

Re: First Thing To Do with New AA1? Fix the window!

oh, one question... Why do some of the windows scroll off the bottom of the screen? I can't get to the buttons hidden down there except via alt key commands.
Any fixes? Clicking on the top right of the window to change the size of the window doesn't help. Stuff is still hidden at the bottom of the screen and I can't drag a corner up to make the window fit the screen size.

    Hi Aspiration

For a backup/restore of the SSD onto a USB stick look at macles blog with the following link. It will not backup any SD card/USB data but it is free and gives you the confidence to play about with the One.

    http://macles.blogspot.com/search?updat ... results=12

An SDHC card works just fine but if you use it in the LH slot have a look at the thread called "Expansion & Ports" further down the forum for what it actually does. Formatting as Fat32 works just fine for me.

Screen sizing? Remember Acer created their own desktop and this causes some of the problems. There is no easy way to alter the screen resolution unless you are into Linux coding. I do not use the standard Acer desktop but from memory the bar at the bottom of the screen can be "removed" by clicking on the arrow head in the left hand corner. You mention the Alt key and I assume you mean clicking and holding Alt key and then grabbing the window with the mouse.

    Re passwords (again)
Thanks Solpuerto for clarifying the start up new machine password aka Root and its subsequent use.
So what is the "User Password" option in Settings for? I have read pages 5-7 of the application menu but (forgive me author) it is not particularly clear.
Under "entering passwords" the last option hints to me that it is an opening password to "use the computer" Is this right?
If so if setting it for the first time does one leave current password blank, and is it correct that a valid password really does have to be random letters and numerals for the machine to accept it.
Sorry if this is all obvious but dont wish to foul this up and find myself somehow locked out.
Great resource of forum. Look forward to any advice.

I remember reading somewhere on the forums that you can alt click the center of a window and drag it around to see the bottom of the window. This does not work. Tried it already.

one of the first things I learned about this computer is that the sleeve for the computer doesn't fit unless the battery is removed! duh!

Interesting. I've got an ancient AOA150-1570 (3-cell battery) which fits into the sleeve with just fine - no need to detach the battery. Of course, I only get about 2 hrs of battery life.
