THE solution to choppy video playback on Acer Aspire One Net

OR -- you could just do what I did:

UPDATE your Synaptics (touchpad) driver to 14.0.3 from the Synaptic website:

    http://www.synaptics.com/support/drivers

I can't claim this will work for everyone -- but Hulu, HD YouTube videos and more work for me on my Acer Aspire One 751 without a hitch now.
I suspect this fix will work for you too.
Bonus: No messy beta Flash installs...

(Link to my original post here: viewtopic.php?f=44&t=15378&start=20#p108774 )

    Merry (early) Christmas everyone!
    Enjoy those netbooks!

Re: THE solution to choppy video playback on Acer Aspire One Net

    This is to Uptownguy:

I am still trying to comprehend your post. Are you saying that the new *touchpad drivers* somehow enable hardware accelerated decoding of H.264 streaming video? What in the world do touchpad drivers have to do with DXVA (DirectX Video Acceleration) using the GMA 500 chipset?

Now, if you were to tell me that the new touchpad drivers use fewer CPU cycles, and hence give a *modest* performance boost. I would believe you. But implying that the touchpad drivers enable hardware decoding of flashplayer video is crazy (or at least misinformed). There's no version of the Intel Atom CPU that is fast enough - not even the dual core models - to play 720p Youtube or Hulu videos on their own. Without Flashplayer 10.1 you have no DXVA support of streaming video. And if you have no DXVA support, you have no hardware decoding. Simple as that.

I'm not trying to "say" anything of the sort. (Wow -- Something I love about online support forums -- instead of trying to solve problems, people try to make it into a contest.)

What I am saying is that I noticed on my Acer Aspire One that when I was playing videos (Hulu, You Tube high resolution videos, etc) that when I was moving my mouse back and forth over the video window, the jerkiness seemed to go away. SOOOOOOO... I updated to the latest Synaptics drivers and have found that now I can watch Hulu / High Def YouTube videos, etc. using my Aser Aspire One (with GMA Integrated Video) ...

I'd be curious to know if this works for people. I've already posted in other areas and found this is working for other people.
But, hey... I didn't write the touchpad drivers and I can't tell you what happens under the hood. I only know what worked for me...

Sorry I couldn't be more of a geek and tell you what I found in the source code, etc. etc. or otherwise answer whatever it is you are asking.
I was just trying to help the community. I had a problem for a long time. I found a solution. I thought people might want to know.

    Perhaps not...

My apologies, but *in the context of this thread* your post implies that you are able to get HD flash video acceleration without the new flashplayer. I hope you do not blame me too much for taking your post in its context here.

As I said, all evidence on Atom-equipped netbooks and atom-equipped desktop computers (many, many reviews) shows that HD youtube (720p/1080p) does not play smoothly using the CPU alone. That includes computers that don't have synaptics touchpads.

I am really quite curious about your results. It would certainly be great. Can you play this video smoothly, in full screen, after hitting the 720p HD toggle? Just by changing the touchpad driver? That would be a great finding. But it sounds too good to believe

PS: My post above was not in anyway angry - just incredulous. I was not meaning to jump on you, so much as express my shock at what I thought you were saying, which was based on the context of this thread.

I'm having an issue with this solution. YouTube HD works perfect now, but when I stop the clip or try to go to another page, Firefox crashes... Explorer doesn't crash but If I switch to fullscreen the netbook lags A LOT (the video plays smoothly btw, just the browser gets laggy). It took me 5 minutes to switch off fullscreen...

I've found that it works pretty well in google chrome (my main browser), but it definitely causes flashplayer to crash more often than using the older Flashplayer 10.0. The great thing about Chrome is that flashplayer can crash, and Chrome just shuts the plugin down. Just hit 'refresh' and it will reload again with no problems. But yes, this Beta is not the most stable version of Flash.

Try clicking directly on the video to pause it, rather than using the player controls. I find that it pauses the video instantly, while the player controls can be laggy. Also, consider using Google Chrome if you can live without some of the great extensions that Firefox offers, but Chrome lacks.

Let's hope the final version of the new Flashplayer will be more stable and less buggy! For now, we'll have to live with some compromises and instability as a trade-off for accelerated video. Maybe not worth it for everyone...

There is a new flash 10.1 beta 2(debbuger) on adobe's page. Now, there is no way to get HW acceleration support in beta 2 on AO751h(even with Vista driver : 7.14.10.1006) :(

I had the same problem. I had to roll back to the old version (Flashplayer 10.1 Beta 1), since I got no acceleration under Beta 2. A big step backward for us. Hopefully the final release will work with the GMA 500 chipset. But yeah, extremely disappointing!

Does anyone have a link to the 10.1 beta 1? Of course, I deleted beta 1 after downloading beta 2 and now can't find it anywhere online

Re: THE solution to choppy video playback on Acer Aspire One Net

Didn't work for me. I can watch HD video (720) in the small "box" screen with a few frames dropped here and there, but in full screen, it's unwatchable due to most of the frames being dropped. SD video works better, but still not in full screen.

That said, I didn't buy my Acer to watch video and so I don't really care. For video, I have my new iMac and my MacBook.

Is Aero theme enabled on your Desktop? Try to enable it before playing.

UPDATE: Intel has finally released a GMA 500 driver that it states will support hardware acceleration in Flash 10.1 Beta! This driver was only posted to Intel's site yesterday (January 4th).

I haven't tried it yet, but I'll report back when I do.

EDIT: CONFIRMED WORKING WITH FLASH 10.1 BETA 1. CONFIRMED *NOT WORKING* WITH THE FLASH BETA 2 (i.e. the new version posted on Adobe's website). Note that when using Flash 10.1 Beta 1, there is still the problem of the video turning entirely green under 1080p Youtube. However, normal 720p ("HD") Youtube videos play fine. Still not perfect, but at least we can use updated graphics drivers.

Does anyone still have Flash 10.1 Beta 1?

I am currently using the latest drivers (8.14.10.2020) and I can't watch HD Youtube videos :(

If someone can please help me that would be great!
