I haven't seen original picture, but judging from description this is what original poster suggests:

well... *sigh* I was a skeptic, now I am a believer.

I did this mod on a freaking whim, I did manage to strip one of the heatsink screws and was unable to get it out, but I won't need to anymore.

The mod works..... the bottom is cooler on my lap, the average temp is still about 50C for me, but the max has dropped from 73C(sometimes up to 80C when charging and HULU'ing) or so down to 65-68C, nearly 10C..... Still occasionally gets up to 73C but drops very quickly back down.

I am very glad I did this mod....

You should use a diet Dr. Pepper can as it works better than a green teat one (joking of course), but it actually works, airflow over my heatsink is better and I cut the ducting so that it blows right out the vent holes in the chassis. Beautiful.

    Thanks to the OP!

    @ speekergeek:

Did you take pics? The originals are gone, and some pics would be helpful. Basically just making a cover for the open (bottom) side of the air channel, to seal it instead of sealing it to the chassis? I remember seeing the original pics forever ago, but have seen so many that I can't remember exactly...

    Yes and No.

In the YT vid the heatsink has been modified by adding cooling fins made from strips of aluminium bent into a right angled profile.

The OP used the aluminium sheet (from a Green Tea can) to seal the heatsink and create a duct, rather than relying on the bottom of the case to form the seal. The OP also mounted an off the shelf finned heatsink inside the duct.

Yes, in a nutshell you tape a square piece of an aluminum can over the heatsink top, creating a duct to better channel the airflow over the new heatsink that I added.

The foam tape they use does not seal well, adding the additional "ducting" helps channel the airflow better.

    I did not take pictures.

cut a small piece of a can, maybe 2 inches by 3 inches and size it up to the fan ducting, you want it to be the same size and shape so it fits over the top of the channel.

Then just tape it on using strong tape such as duct-tape, don't use electrical or other crappy tape, it is already kind of mickey-mouse as it is :)

    But it works

That's what I was thinking this mod was. Thanks for clearing it up for me. Still need to order my heat sinks and Arctic Silver. Wanna do it all at once, and will take pics when I do.

I'll be performing this mod this weekend (if I can find a decent pair of scissors to cut the can..). I would love to see some pictures of the OP, or somebody else who performed this mod.

This is my post on another thread, but relevant here as well:

I've spent pretty much all evening changing the cooling system on my AAO. And I'm quite disapointed by the results:
    Code:
    Before mod:
    Idle (10 mins) 32'C
    Movie (10 mins) 42'C
    After mod:
    Idle (10 mins) 30'C
    Movie (10 mins) 40'C
:( Only two degrees! And I changed the thermal pads, added a homemade heatsink and covered the airduct..
You can see the pics here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/36400994@N ... 210217056/
Please let me know if I did anything wrong..

PS I know I should have tested the temp after every step (being: the thermal paste, the heatsink and the cover), but I just didn't have enough time..

You started out with real good numbers. Did you expect to idle with less then 30'C ?

Well I expected it to be more silent, because I thought the fan would kick in later. Now I feel it's the opposite.. Unfortunately I have no info on the RPM of the fan or the decibels, but I think its worse now than before..

PS, I have the fan controlled by the BIOS, so the idle temperature is with fan on..
