My current laptop has gigabit, and my whole house is wired with gigabit access. I use the fast access to load movies, ISO's, other content from my NAS to my laptop when i travel, etc etc.

There are several USB 2.0 adapters that are "gigabit" in the sense that they provide more than 100mbits, but not true gigabit due to bus limitations. Has anyone else thought of creative ways to add true, real gigabit lan access to the one?

You could do it via the PCI-X slot easily. Just need to solder on a socket, and find an adapter!

I think you meant PCI Express. PCI-X is reserved for hi-end servers. It's based on the 32bit PCI, but expanded to 64bit i believe.

Not interested in removing the wifi card from the pci slot :(

In a perfect world, there would be a combination PCI card with B/G/N, Gigabit, and Bluetooth that we could put in. I would happily hack up the "on-board" RJ45 to the new gigabit card. Oh well, dream on.
