    Hi,
Anyone know if I can view .NEF files using the GIMP. No problem with JPEGs, but UFRAW just produces a "File corrupted" message when I try to view .NEF.
If it can`t be done, then I guess I`ll just have to install XP.

    Hi
I'm a complete amateur but have put on GIMP (sounds rude) and took the sd card from my Nikon D40 and was able to open a RAW (.nef) image no problem in GIMP. If I can do it it must be easy.

    Nick,

I downloaded Gimp and had the same problem - couldn't open files from my D70. However, if you go back to Add/Remove Software and search on Gimp there is a download associated with Gimp that allows it to read RAW files.

    Hope this helps

    Nick

You need to check if GIMP supports the RAW format of the camera.
I was not aware that GIMP supported RAW conversion.
The RAW file does have a TIF/JPG file in its header info that is really only a thumbnail of the final output content in the RAW file when it is converted to JPG or TIFF, etc...

DcRAW does work on Linux and supports a number of RAW camera file formats.

Each RAW format is different and needs to be included in the build for the application else it doesnt understand the pixel layout so cannot interpret the RAW files.
