    Good morning,

I'm running 2009.0 with Gnome and am thinking about switching to KDE 4.2 Can this be done without a re-install? Where can I find a how-to, my google-fu seems to be broken atm

    Thanks

Just install KDE via the "add/remove software" menu in Mandriva.
After a restart, you can simply switch to KDE during the login menu by clicking on the little symbol in the lower right hand corner of the field where you enter your username and password.
Gnome will remain installed and you can choose which to use at every login.

Of course, if you want kde 4.2, don't forget to add the repositories I put in the post below. If not, you'll get kde 4.1.x

What are you wanting from KDE that you can not get with Gnome?

    Reconfigurability?
    Flexibility?
    No hiding of options?
No patent encumbered add-ons (mono and its ilk)?
    No spatial browser?
    Better looking?
    Snappier?

Thanks, that sounds "easy" enough ...

I don't want anything specific. Mandriva on the Aspire One is my first foray into Linux. I changed to Mandriva because I wanted a "full" distro that worked on the one, and went with the recommendation that Gnome seemed to match the capabilities of the machine better.

All in all, it works well, and does everything I want. The only thing not working is that I have to switch off the 3d effects to run VLC, and, that the machine reacts noticeably slower with 3d enabled. Fair enough.

In some of the usenet groups I read KDE 4 had not gotten a great deal of positive endorsement anyway, but 4.2 seems to get a much more positive echo, along the lines of: this is the KDE they should have shipped with 2009.0 to begin with. So this seems to be a good opportunity to have a look at KDE before 2009.1 comes out in a few week and contemplate a re-install (I'm sure I've messed up some settings in the meantime).

    Cheers,

    Thomas

So, have KDE 4.2 running since thursday, so far no problem, apart from bluetooth and synce. Has anybody got synce to work under kde?

    Cheers,

    Thomas

Gnome is snappier.... flexible enough & very customizable as well. I have tried both KDE and GNOME on my AAO.

I love the way Mandriva 2009 works with our AAO. But the calling of windows apps is driving me nuts. I do have other laptops and desktops, but I have this itch to reinstall XP.... grrrr.

Wine works under either KDE or Gnome.
