    c:\windows\system32\igfxtray.exe
    c:\windows\system32\hkcmd.exe
    c:\windows\system32\igfxext.exe/regserver
    c:\windows\system32\PersistenceThread.exe

Those are what show up in msconfig and what pop up when I boot my computer asking me to run them, as if I had clicked on the .exe, which I hadn't.

So do I need to finish executing them or can I ignore & remove them from msconfig?

    *Update:

So I installed the new drivers that Intel's website just posted yesterday.
    Everything went fine last night.
But today, my netbook froze for 3 times already.

I am still puzzled what causes the lock ups.
    can anybody enlighten me?

Let me know too if the new drivers worked for you.
    Thanks!

These are all Intel Driver files, including persistencethread.exe. You can set it up so it doesn't give you that annoying warning everytime the files run on your computer (via Windows Defender's Software Explorer, then under the category "startup programs". Set them all to "permitted". You can live without these files, but they do offer some advanced powersaving features that may give you a few minutes of extra battery life. PersistenceThread resets the screen brightness to the default when your system restarts or resumes from sleep. Some people find that annoying. I like that it does that. I just set my power saving scheme accordingly.

I killed persistencethread.exe from boot, but it is a valid Intel GMA500 file. Who knows what it does?

YES. I manually installed both drivers from Intel'swebsite: the ...1005 and ...1006 from the device manager.
Today, my netbook locked up for 15 times and still counting....

I am just wondering why this happens, this is my 3rd replacement netbook... same exact problem.
I don't know if it is a software/OS issue or the hardware.
    Pls. help!

I am no pc tech and don't pretend to be but if this is your third 751 with freeze problems you are one lucky person. Are you getting these freeze problems right out of the box without installing/uninstalling anything?

What happens in safe mode? See if you can get it to lock up in there.

I remember some people have stability problems when they changed the front side bus speed by even a little bit. I wonder if there is some piece of hardware on these systems that is makes some of them inherently flaky. Hence Acer's reason for underclocking the chipset and processor...

    Yes, straight from the box.
I've only had it for hours and it froze specially when it gets pretty hot underneath.

Can you get Speedfan and tell us the 4 temps you get before it locks up?

I tried the Speedfan awhile now and I cannot see any pattern why it freezes. Usually the temps show between 40 and 50 degrees C. I can watch HD movies without any problem(exept a little staggering), cpu running around 90% and temps 50 to 60 degrees C. But using yahoo messenger with webcam, it almost always freeze after awhile. I am running XP.

That's gotta be driver related then.
These CPUs are rated to run fine up to 90C, so unless you've got bad contact with the heatsink, you're basically not going to hit those temps.

I found that overclocking has one stability issue... the Ethernet port cant connect as soon as you OC... so to make sure that Windows does not go into a hang... it tries in the background to search for shares on all networks etc... I just disabled the port... then no more lock ups and slow downs .... just my 10C... your mileage may differ :)

My netbook has no modifications and BIOS is still 3204.
    It still freezes.
I believe it is a hardware issue. Correct me if I am wrong.

    Thanks
