To be honest the standalone GPS units do the job better at present.

As far as I'm aware (This as of two months ago when I was researching doing a car computer) there is no linux mapping software that can currenctly give turn by turn directions. (At least that's available to us.. There are some in car gps/mapping units that run on Linux)

GPS will work with Google Earth, but you need to buy a subscription (approximately $20/year). The free version doesn't support GPS. I don't know about Google maps; never tried it with GPS.

You can always run Destinator under Wine in Linux.

I read reports that's working fine.

Now we just need to find a low cost (but reliable) USB-GPS for the car ;-)

While I am a big fan of Open Source and have been for a long time, there are some types of software where I don't believe that the model works well and SatNav is a perfect example of this. There is no reason why there could not be a good Open Source program but the maps are a different matter. Without current, accurate, detailed maps, SatNav software is useless.

Roadnav appears only to have US maps. I don't know if they are accurate.

There is another drawback as well which is the One's size. While it is very small for a laptop, it's huge for a SatNav. It is possible to buy car holders for them (how well they work I don't know) but if you don't, your lovely little machine will be in the footwell before you can say "Jack Robinson".

If you need turn by turn directions, you cannot do better than to buy a TomTom in my opinion. My TomTom does one thing and it does it very well.

question about installing roadnav on linpus system:

there's a roadnav rpm for fedora7, would there be issues installing on fedora8?

there is source code with libraries, is that better than trying the f7 rpm?

has anyone installed this on the linpus/fedora system successfully?

    thank you
