I was wondering if the double sided tape that you used was the thin type or the type with foam in between.

    Thanks!

    Hi rgarjr,

I noticed these mods you've done with your One:

Mods: 4-Port USB Hub, Bluetooth, Touch Screen, AverMedia ASTC tuner

Did you use the Wireless connections for your Bluetooth AND your Touch Panel?

Yeah I used the USB data wires off the Mini PCIe connector. Feed those to a 4-port hub and then to my usb devices. There's a also a header on the bottom of the motherboard that has USB connection as you can find that thread on the hacks and mods section.

    Hi Lufcfan!

Absolutely a great tutorial, and one that made me order a touchscreen! Got mine from DealExtreme. It was almost identical to the one you used, except the ribbon connector was a bit different.

However, I believe I got into trouble.. I think I have a short on the mini-PCI-e between pin 36 and 34 (I think, it is the one above it, 10th pin from the front of the AA1. Unfortunately I didn't measure the resistance prior to soldering. But I highly doubt it is in the 6-7 ohm range... I had great trouble soldering the USB+ and USB- (on pin 38 and 36, miracoulously there were no short between those), but I had to remove them again due to the short. Too damn bad, because everything else seem to have worked out really smoothly. This is all I have left, as I installed the touchscreen first.

So now I'm wondering what to do. I've tried to scrape between pin 36 and 34, to no avail. Also, I highly doubt I will be able to solder onto pin 38 and 36 again if I manage to get rid of the short.. but that's the least of my problem now...
The spacing is really really small too, to the limit of my vision.. I'm finding myself using magnifyers for the first time in my life (I'm mid-30's..).

Anyone measured the resistance between those two pins? Its the 9th and 10th from the front of the AAO.. I think it is betwee USB- and GND... Im just reaching for straws here, it'll suck if I destroyed it. Is it critical even if they are shorted? I mean, would I be able to use it, just not the USB-connection on the mini-PCI-e? If so I guess I would use one of the other USB's..

First, Silverferret, I'm pretty new to this forum, but I saved LUFCfan's guide on my computer. I guess there is a PM-function here, just send me your email adress and I'll mail it to you.

Second: I have given up installing the touchscreen. Luckily, my AA1 works, even though I guess the USB- connection is shorted to GND in the internal mini-PCI-e USB connector.

First I tried using one of the three other external USB ports, and the controller got innstalled. The touchscreen worked for maybe 2 seconds when I opened the screen in a particular angle, so I figured a bad connection at the hinge. At other times it either didn't work at all, or it "mouseclicked" at the calibration-screen's first X. Then I tested the touchscreen while the machine was open, to rule out any jammed or shorted wires or jammed touchscreen (from the casing, which I also removed). No go. Not at all. I tried a lot of things, until I got tired of it all. The "2 hour guide" turned into 4 days... so yes I've tried and tried.

I now have it as an extra glass in front of the original LCD screen for mechanical and dust protection... and thats it.

It was a great guide, really! But I'm not up to try this particular one again.

EDIT: Here's the guide with images (TTL=7 days): http://wikisend.com/download/482964/Acer Aspire One Touchscreen.rar

    Hi guys,

I succeeded in installing the deal extreme touchscreen in my acer aspireone running on LINUX!! Finally I can get my email without using the touchpad or my mouse.

I openend up the aspire one as in the tutorial, but in the end I decided to keep the controller external. I don't mind using an USB cable and the controller can be sticked on the back of the screen. First I wanted to leave the controller out until I had sufficient confidence in the touchscreen, but now i decided to leave it this way

IMPORTANT TIP: although the deal extreme and the ebay touchkit (I broke before) are the same. Both are DIFFERENT then the screen in the tutorial. The connector on the screen is on the left side instead of on the right side!!! This is important.

Just rememember you have to mount the glass side off the touchscreen on the LCD screen. The "thick" glass of the touchscreen is the carrier / structure of the screen.

SECOND TIP: You can (propably) open up the LCD screen assembly without opening up the main body of the apire one. This way it is a lot less intrusive to add a touchscreen to the system.

    good luck

Note: deal extreme is a real dare devil with its shipments. They just wrap the screen in bubble plastic. Shove it in an envellope and hope for the best...

Just a little tip, if you use Firefox for web browsing, you can install the Grab & Drag add-on, which is really cool with the touchscreen mod. Just swipe your finger down or up on the screen for scrolling.

Step 15, the wire order you have specified is WRONG! And you pictures are shit quality, and incomplete especially when it came to routing the ribbon.
It should 1,2,3,4 (or 4,3,2,1 as its not polarity concisous)

The old switcheroo you described (2->1 and 1->2) caused me hours of headache F$^#%@(*#@$&*#$)(E#@*$!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Pin out of the touch controller PCB

Pin out of the connecter (looking from the rear)

Rtards on ebay are doing a good job of not communicating this, and constantly changing the colour of the wires.... making things easy for us.

I noticed that on dealextreme, and some vendors on ebay, the ribbon comes with a longer extension cable.
With these models, would it mean that the only requirement would be to solder the USB pins from the controller board to a USB Head ?

Also, you mentioned an "easier" way to do it, but would take up one USB slot. How would this work ?

    Thanks!!

If you'd like to see the touch screen in action before taking the plunge, I've made a video that demonstrates every day usage of the screen. :D

    Here's my touchscreen video:

PS: I also placed the screen's controller in the empty 3G card slot instead of on top of the hard drive to prevent any more vibrations between the keyboard and the hard drive.

Absolutely fantastic... I was wondering about TS on my AA1 but now I'm more convinced it's a good idea to install one :)

Wowwww....I'm giving you a cookie for this.

Great mod, especially when it doesn't affect the aesthetics of the device at all! I may have to try this when I've got a decent set of soldering equipment to work with and taken some brave pills.

K I dunno much so don't kill me if I say something wrong.

Anyway wouldn't it be a lot easier to solder the USB data lines straight off the NIC instead of the port? that way if you destroy your NIC you can always buy a new one.

Another thing is couldn't you use the usb webcam connector instead of the connections off the PCI-E port? I just figure it would be easier 2 cut the webcam wires and solder the wires instead of straight onto the board. If you need a webcam you can always solder it back onto a usb hub.
