Hi, first post on the forum and new to Linux as well!! :)

Must say having good fun thought...well most of the time.

I booted up this morning and got the HAL initialize error just after the front end finished loading.
This was about the time the wireless card became active.
Went past the error but no wireless!!!!!

So thought what would have caused it since last night.
Well i had installed Picasa and in the settings got the software to scan all folders/drives all the time for pictures and not just the user folders.
When I got it to ignore the main system folders in its scan and rebooted the error went away!!

So thought someone out there might get the same issue and would benefit from my scary experience.
