    Hi All,

I read some other posts in this forum about hard disk clicking (apparently it is the heads going into and out-of standby mode for power saving).

It really annoys me to all end, and although it seems there is a windows hack to deal with the issue, how does a person deal with this issue in Linux?

Can it be fixed in Linpus linux? Or should I install Mandriva (ie: will it go away if I use Mandriva)?

    Thanks.

Possibly the sdparm utility will help you?

    Code:
    sudo sdparm -all /dev/sda
Should tell you whether standby is active on the drive.

Do a google on how to use sdparm to turn off standby if it's turned on.

    Cheers.

Thanks for the reply. When I updated Linpus, it seemed to be better (less clicking, so apparently acer has listened to customer feedback and adjusted the standby settings on the hard drive). And now I have put Mandriva on both my acers, and the drive rarely clicks. If it gets bothersome, I will certainly look into sdparm as you suggest.
