I've been using my AA1 (hard drive, Win XP version) this afternoon no problem.

Now I switch on, the green lights and the wifi lights flash once, go out. The power light stays on, but I've a blank screen!

I've invested in a larger battery to get a decent battery life, and a USB DVD reader/writer
    Any suggestions?

Try connecting an external monitor and see what happens.

Ouch. Did you open it up or void the warranty in any other way? If not I'd consider taking it back.

Yea, that might be it, but it's weird that it just happened out of the blue. Weird things do tend to happen to these machines tho :p

Enter the Bios "F2" and verify that the bios version number has changed. I have found that I need to reflash the Bios with the "F12" procedure in order for the version number to get changed.

It is like the "esc" "fn" method does not write the entire bios.
