I accidentally dropped my Aspire one with its 160 GB HD. There is no noticeable damage but I am hearing a ticking coming from the HD. Now, that might be me being paranoid and it was always there, but is it a sign of trouble to come?

It works just fine, heck, I am on it now, but I would like an opinion.

    Thanks :)

when i dropped my work laptop the hd started making a ticking noise. then i started getting read errors on very few files. then more files. then it died. your problem may not get worse, but i suggest making a backup just in case.

A tick is different from a click when it comes to HDD's. If it's just a tick, it could be the heads parking due to APM and no cause for concern. If it is indeed a distinct "click" noise, then I agree with you.

It's a tick, not a click. If you put your ear close you can hear it :geek:

Use the smartmontools to find out what your hard drive is doing healthwise. If it has any problems, it will show you.

Mine makes a slight tick once in a while. It sounds like the heads parking or the power settings shutting down the drive.
