HDMI problems connecting to TV

I have a Aspire 6530 with the HDMI port. I bought the laptop with the intention to connecting to my TV. The TV is about 1 year old with High Definition I use my Samsung surround sound and DVD through it via HDMI with no problems. When I connected my laptop via HDMI came up on the TV not supported. How can I overcome this problem please? I take it this must be a problem with the laptop. Is there a setting on laptop that I have missed or do I need to set to a different screen setting first. Can somebody please help me.
