Bleh, that's what I meant, just didn't bother to go and fix it since so many people let it slide.

That's OK, it just means that apps (such as fan control) and kernels that are available for the AAO for Linux don't work for OSX. We don't want OS X users to get excited over nothing! ;)

About my fan mod: I'm pretty sure it's louder now than before. I might reverse my modding (with the exception of the paste: can't re-apply the pads..) and see what happens..

I've restored my Windows install and ran some tests with fan control enabled (fan disabled up to 80'C). Again I'm not impressed with the results..
    Code:
    Idle 30 min: 50'C
SD Movie 10 min: 59'C (VLC)
    HD Movie 10 min: 76'C (Quicktime 720p)
I do feel the fan is able to cool a bit better: when I kicked on the fan it drove temperature down to 61'C in 1 minute. That's 15'C difference. I'm going to disassemble everything and see if I notice any errors from my side..

    [update]
I've removed the homemade lid from the duct and reapplied the thermal paste. It seems the lid had no influence on the cooling..
    Code:
    Idle 30 min: 49'C
SD Movie 10 min: 59'C (VLC)
    HD Movie 10 min: 77'C (Quicktime 720p)
The fan managed to cool down the CPU to 60'C within 1 min, which is even better than with the lid..

could someone give me the maximum allowable height, depth and width available within the duct for a heatsink (the region that will have the largest area of constant width before there is any taper). in mm please.

update: also another thought, has anyone considered creating some sort of duct arrangement within the module.....something like a converging diverging nozzle so as to create a pressure gradient and perhaps speed up the flow to an extent. might help to increase efficiency. also increasing the fin density should help but there will be a limting factor to this.

think its time to dig out the thermo/fluids notes lol.

    thanks!

    nice one thanks

does a group of 6 fill the module or is there room for more? also looking at this site http://www.specialtech.co.uk/spshop/customer/product.php?productid=1604&cat=0&page= it describes Dimensions (Front Side) & Dimensions (back Side).....are there 2 different profiles of heat sink in this pack? it seems so looking at this pic: [IMG] ....are they both 6mm high?

might consider this, but perhaps replace the thermal adhesive tape with a thermal epoxy/thermal paste adhesive?

    thanks

You could fit 7.5 of these heatsinks maybe. I thought 6 were fine. I used the included self adhesive.

Only the four smaller ones in the set you have a picture of fit, but there is a guy on ebay selling sets of eight of the smaller ones.

    He ships super fast.

looks great mate! those heatsinks look to be a perfect fit! Nice pics btw. Wot temps do you get now and which OS are you using?

Does anyone know if thermal paste has a use by date as such? i have arctic silver thats been lying around for well over a year now....would it be still ok or better to get some new stuff?

    Hi, first post.

Speaking about the thermal pads vs Thermal compound and the gap resulting of changing them. mmm could be a possibility to use a mixed method?

I'll try to explain, could be a possibility to cut the exact place of the cpu, northbridge contact that is cleary marked on the original thermal pad with a cutter and fill the gap with thermal compound, leaving as a frame/spacer the original thermal pad.?

    Any opinion?

I have added a copper heatsink (After a little bit of cutting to make it fit) and now along with arctic silver the idle temperature is around 35C down from 39C and when usage is near 100% it maintains around 55C :)

just a question: Is it possible or wise not to use the fan?
My a1ctl says 60°C in normal use after an hour...
    Fan set to slow.

What is the max. temp for the atom?

Well pics, dropped the project as i wasnt completely satisfied, however - a few days ago i decided to get the damn thing finished so now im back in the process of modding my aspire one to make the cooler shut up, and keep the small machine silent.

Atm im looking for a better (larger) fan that either fits in the standard heatsink, or build a heatsink myself - any suggestions for a fan replacement?
