Help a Newbie Please

    Hi
    I have just purchased my Acer Aspire 1 8gb with Linux..I have never used that before but so far I have worked out and upgraded to firefox3,got messenger to work, and just downloaded the VLC,
    I can get the music to work but when I go into the film it comes up with the title and every now and then a picture of the film comes up and no sound, can anyone advise me what I need to do please...( in simple easy steps).....lol

    I am sure I will need loads more help to come..
