I saw the tutorial on installing windows with a U3 Drive and it looks much easier. Do you think that way would work.??

hey thanks. whats wierd is i had edited my post to say i tried it.

it is a pretty cool method.. i have not yet installed from u3 i got as har as cd detection and my u3 unstall saw the hdd in AHCI mode (with slipstreamed drivers).

I was just backing up my project files to my server before i format this puppy again.

the only thing i did not check, can i put the sandisk u3 back on here at a later time since this is my only U3 stick?..

Yes. You can download the U3 app from Sandisk's site. Just format your USB before reinstall...actually, i believe that it does it automatically, as it warns that all data on the drive will be lost, yadda, yadda...

In short, yes, you can revert back to stock U3 state when you are done...

I just did it twice.. with 2 differant XP installs. it is pretty easy. thanks for the idea.

unmountable device? it sounds like a driver.

did you turn the Sata to IDE?.

it might be possible that the USB needs SP3?

Thanks. this ISO thing is really handy, but it is a bit of a pain to change ISO files. i want to look at the the sandisk tool

Grr i wrote up a small tut and lost it when dot.net changed webpages on me...

What i did on this last build to test U3.

1 I copied my XP Pro SP3 (corporate) CD to a temp folder (C:\MyXP)
2 I copied the lan and wifi drivers to C:\MyXP\$oem$\Drivers folder and trimed away the vista/64 bit

( that wont install them, but I'll have them on the "cd" to install them manually to get to my server for the other drivers later) [you can add them with nlite if you wish]

3 Nlited it a bit. I removed some stuff i know i did not need. (amd support, briefcase, netmeeeting, removed system restore, etc.) set machine type to and unattended stuff.

*Important* Set the Computer Type to "ACPI Multiprocessor PC".

4 manually deleted some unused folders like the win 95 and nt upgrade.

5 I added the Acer OEM setup I ripped from my aspire one and switched my key from the Corp version to the Acer one. (I doubt anyone will do this step)

6 made the ISO with nLite

    7. made the U3 stick following the tutorial.

8 rebooted and turned the SATA to IDE. [if you you dont have the drivers slipstreamed]

    9 installed XP.

10 installed my Lan drivers and connected to my server for the rest of the drivers.

11 upgraded to AHCI [not needed if you slipstreamed the driver]

12 Reg edit for L2 cache,

13 Power management for wifi card tweak

    14 installed App's..

15 Ran MSConfig to remove everything from startup but the touchpad.

it is quite possible thet drive is bad. It happens.

I decided to check for toshiba hard drive diagnostic tools.

    Toshiba
    N/A (N/A)
Toshiba does not provide diagnostic tools for hard drives, currently.

Hard Disk Drives and Optical Disk Drives purchased as part of a complete system are warranted by the system OEM. Please contact your system manufacturer for further details. 2.5" Hard Disk Drive ("HDD") products purchased in the United States and Canada from Toshiba authorized distributors carry a 3-year limited warranty. 1.8" Hard Disk Drive ("HDD") products purchased in the United States and Canada from Toshiba authorized distributors carry a 1-year limited warranty. Optical Disk Drive("ODD") products purchased in the United States and Canada from Toshiba authorized distributors carry a 1-year limited warranty. Toshiba's USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive carries a 1-year limited warranty. Click here for additional information.

For warranty service, please contact the Toshiba SDD Repair Center.

    Sorry.
At least you got to dive a bit into the hobby of customizing your windows...

edit * i am finding refferances to "Toshiba Hard Disk Diagnostic 2.00b" on a few recovery CD's. maybe there is one now.

there is a posiblity that because your cd was an OEM, it might be missing a few driver files.
