help funny icon ????

Hi i brought my daughter a acer aspire one for xmas and everything was working fin until this funny oblong box with a star in the middle appeared on the home page...when you hover over it it says "New item This item has not yet been configured I cant rid of it cant click on it and i cannot connect to the internet Any ideas ??? Any help would be great as my daughter is deverstated and im useless !!!
