    Okay, so here's the deal:
After running the custom desktop-script on a newly recovered system, I decided to remove the swap-partition as i need the space and already have 1.5GB ram. I commented out the right line in fstab, booted up with Parted Magic 3.0 USB, removed the swap and resized sda1. I hit apply and all is well. Until the reboot...

Now it won't even show the POST-screen, just a black screen. Sometimes the fan starts, sometimes it doesn't. No reaction on the SDD-led, although my usb-sticks gives off a brief flash as I turn the power on.

So, any good ideas of what might have gone wrong? I've tried removing the BIOS-battery without it helping, the next thing I'll probably try is booting without the SSD connected, but all in all i think something else has gone horribly wrong, something which would mean that I need to replace it. And since I've already installed more RAM the warranty is void

You can try to recover it or clear the CMOS. Further information in this thread.

Chances are the recovery will work, make sure you give that a shot first.

I can't understand all you people who want to modify your computer after you buy it! Why don't you get a machine that has the specs you want and therefore avoid any damage you could do when you take the unit apart. I wouldn't dream of opening my Aspire One. Would invalidate the warranty anyway!

You didn't do anything wrong. it's a known bios issue when booting from usb devices. http://macles.blogspot.com/ has a post on bios recovery - it's not as scary as it sounds. there's also an entire thread called "dead aspire one" with issues related to the bios and reflashing if you need more help.

hansi1: setting aside the fact that the non-booting issue is not causedby this persons modifications... for some people the point of buying a cheap laptop is precisely the desire to tinker with them. Just because you wouldn't want to invalidate your warranty, doesn't mean everyone has to agree.

Well, if you can get me a Mac that's as small and low-priced as the One, with a 30GB 1,8" drive and compatible wifi card, then just tell me...

The EXACT same thing happened to me last night. And the weird thing is....is that this is the THIRD time. REally. I have brought 2 AAO 150's back to Best Buy because I thought they were bricked. I turn it on and all I get is the power light on but a black screen.

I was going to have my wife bring this one back but I'm going to try and follow the instructions above and see what's up.

sgtslwilson: if you take a look at the original "dead aspire one thread" you will find the reason for the bricking is a issue with booting off USB. And you wil also find there is an update for this expected in a few days.

Can one of the mods close this thread so that all further discussion can be redirected to the proper thread?

officialy acer claims any attempts to open the laptop , including to upgrade ram, no matter who it is done by, service centre or otherwise, will void the warranty.

BUT some people have managed to get away with it, so mileage may vary. I know that's not as specific an answer as you were hoping for, but that's the situation :)

Generally speaking, if you're careful, and you remove the extra ram before sending it in, it SHOULD be fine.

    But officially, no :)

    I meant recovering the bios...
Too late now, DHL just collected my ONE to take it to acer.

Ooooh heh na flashing the bios doesn't void your warranty. It's the same download page as the drivers that wouldn't be very nice of them would it? :) If you do it wrong macles has a thread about how to bring it back to life too...

It's too bad you sent yours back already. Here's hoping you get a new better one!
