Ok plz before everybody tells me to read the main post about installing VLC I have read that post through a number of times but for the life of me I have tried everything spoken about there and still cant get this dam thing to work.

This is what i put into the terminal.

    [user@localhost ~]$ su -
    Password:
    [root@localhost ~]# rpm -ivh http://rpm.livna.org/livna-release-8.rpm
    Retrieving http://rpm.livna.org/livna-release-8.rpm
error: skipping http://rpm.livna.org/livna-release-8.rpm - transfer failed - Unknown or unexpected error
    [root@localhost ~]#

The Laptop is connected to the net via my wireless connection and I know its working as iam writing this message from this very Laptop. I even tried some other commands in the post but it just never seems to want to connect to the net via the terminal area.

All I bought this thing for was to play avi files while waiting in the car for my kids to finish work at nights.

Plz this is the first time that I have every used a Linix based system so I know that I must be doing something real stupid.

    Plz help somebody.

Hmm. Try downloading and installing the rpm directly from the Livna website:

    http://rpm.livna.org/rlowiki/

Pick the Fedora 8 repository RPM.
    What happens then ?

That would be correct - but it did install the livna repository where vlc is located.

    Now try:
    Code:
    sudo yum install vlc
If you get a lot of dependency errors, make certain that you did run the
    Code:
    sudo yum update fedora-release
command, as mentioned in the main topic :)

Do note that it is also possible to let media master play normal video files. More details here:

Intruiging :s I take it you do not use a hardware router with built-in firewall that likes to block certain connections ?

Ok - alternative. As of today, Acer has made a version available for direct download. See http://macles.blogspot.com/ for details.

However, I fear it will be just as crippled as the normal mplayer, due to the "no copyrighted codecs" bit.

    hmm

Not sure about the modem I use a Dlink Wireless 602g I think. Iam at work right so its not in fron of me. Will try that other link when I get home. But still Iam unsure why the terminal is not seemingly connecting to the net propley when Iam running the commands.

Thanx for your help though. :(

    Well got it to work.

it had nothing to do with me being stupid or the laptop or linix. It was something with my Dlink Dsl G604T Modem. I went back to my old Speedtouch setup my broadband again with it and presto everything installed like a charm.

Now I have to play around with this Dlink Wireless Modem as to why it was blocking the terminal from accessing the files through the net.

I have no idea about how modems work so this will be another late night Iam sure.

Cheers all and now I can use VLC and watch my TV shows.

Anyone who wants to install the very latest version of vlc player 0.9.2, should first remove vlc-0.8.6i and vlc-core-0.8.6i using SYSTEM/ ADD/REMOVE programs. Vlc 0.9.2 requires 4 dependencies to be downloaded and installed. These are:-

    libswscale.so.0
    libgoom2.so.0
    libavformat.so.52
    libx264.so.60

Just use rpm search to locate these above 4 files, and ensure they're for fedora 8, ending in fc8.i386. Download them and double click to install (OR use the Terminal and shell commands to do it.)

Now find the program vlc-0.9.2-30.fc8.i386.rpm using rpm search (for fedora 8), and simply download to a folder on your AAO and double-click to install ( OR use the terminal and shell commands.)
