The Linux version is Linpus Lite, but that is unlikely to be listed as it's not itself a mainstream distro. Your best bet is to look for Fedora 8 (also known as FC8), which HP are likely to list.

    Cheers for that.
i Chose fedora 8 and after i typed the supervisor password it seems to hangs on Pre-commands, but nothing else seems to happen.
When i choose the Hp Deskjet 2500 generic driver the light on the printer flashes but nothing else happens.

Could you copy the terminal session (highlight it all with the mouse / trackpad, then use the copy button on the toolbar) and paste it into a message here? I've just looked at the instructions on the website and can see a few areas which might cause trouble; it would be best to take them one at a time!

    Hi Daldred,
once i have chosen fedora then version 8.
it then asks for Yes to install parallel, then asks for root/supervisor password (which I enter)

Could you actually copy and paste the session? There's an example session of an installation (using Ubuntu rather than Fedora) at the HPLIP site on this page, but it doesn't have any pre-package steps, so I can't compare what you are getting to that sample session.

OK, the issue is dependencies - there is software which the HPLIP package depends upon which is not installed. The installer has already said it can't install PyQt4 by itself, so you'll need to do that manually; it may also have run into trouble trying to install the others (hence the hang).

Let's install PyQt4 first; if we can do this successfully this will also ensure that your system can reach the software repositories OK, so if the HPLIP installer is having trouble it's not to do with your setup.

If you haven't already found the add/remove software functionality, see this HowTo and get as far as having Pirut running. Now in the Search tab, put 'pyqt4' into the search box; the first package listed (pyqt4-4.3.3-1.fc8.i386) is the one you want. Click in it to select the line, then tick the box next to it, and click 'apply'. OK the dialog box which comes up, and wait for the installation to complete. You now have PyQt4 installed; and if you've got this far you've confirmed that your system is set up correctly for software installation.

However, by this stage you may have hit a problem; Pirut may refuse to start with errors, or there may be little or no software listed, or you may get messages about unresolved dependencies. If so, you may need to point it to updated repositories - see macles blog post for more info.

Can we get that far and see what happens? Where we go next rather depends on what you find out by this point!

This may mean you ned to update the repositories. Refer to the macles blog post I mentioned above, do what it says there, then see if Pirut is more co-operative!

Hmmm. You should get some sort of response, even if it's failed.

    Can you run
    Code:
    sudo yum repolist
in a terminal, and copy the output into a post here? This will tell us what repositories are configured, and whether your machine can connect to them.

    Hi,

After doing a full recovery using the disc provided, i managed to get pirut to run and install all fedora updates.
when this was complete i ran the hplip again and it finally worked and guess what the printer works.

Many Thanks for all your help
