HELP!Want to connect My Acer AO751h to My HDTV,but I dont know how.

    I'm a confirmed "newbe" to the computer game,and in WAYYY over my head! I recieved my computer from a family member and I'm just learning how to use it.I would like to use my tv as an external monitor for my computer.I went to a local Radio shack,and the guy said I could hook-up to my HDTV with a vga cable,but every time I plug the cable in,my computer shuts off,wont turn back on unless I un-plug from power source and remove the battery and plug it back in.HELP! (PLEASE)
