I'd like to set a USB device to mount with write permissions for all users and groups. Below you can see chmod doesn't affect the change. What am I missing?

    Code:
    [user@localhost disk-1]$ id
    uid=500(user) gid=500(user) groups=10(wheel),500(user)
    [user@localhost disk-1]$ cat /etc/mtab
    /dev/sda1 / ext2 rw 0 0
    none /dev/pts devpts rw,gid=5,mode=620 0 0
    none /dev/shm tmpfs rw 0 0
    none /sys sysfs rw 0 0
    none /mnt/home aufs rw,si=f39d22c0,xino=/home/user/.aufs.xino,create=mfs,dirs=/home/user=rw 0 0
    /dev/mmcblk0p1 /media/disk vfat rw,nosuid,nodev,uhelper=hal,utf8,shortname=winnt,uid=500 0 0
    /dev/sdb1 /media/WD\040Passport vfat rw,nosuid,nodev,uhelper=hal,utf8,shortname=winnt,uid=500 0 0
    /dev/sdc /media/disk-1 vfat rw,nosuid,nodev,uhelper=hal,utf8,shortname=winnt,uid=500 0 0
    [user@localhost disk-1]$ cat /etc/fstab
    /dev/sda1 / ext2 defaults,noatime 1 1
    none /dev/pts devpts gid=5,mode=620 0 0
    none /dev/shm tmpfs defaults 0 0
    none /proc proc defaults 0 0
    none /sys sysfs defaults 0 0

You are looking at a FAT filesystem on that stick.
Afaik there is no such thing as permissions in FAT.

    HTH, --Japser.

You're right of course. I have a program that doesn't write to the drive. I'll have to think on that problem a bit more...
