Okay so I live in the middle of the woods were no-one is. My neighbors live around a mile away. Well I was just in my house usin' my One and I found a wireless fidelity. It was an Epson Computer to Computer network. I know, it's printers.
But... I found it in my house with one bar. It was there for a few days and it finally went away. What was that all about?
Maybe a new neighbor has one. Oh well, I'll just get a bi-quad antenna and look for it again. My town does have DSL now and maybe I'll find a few networks with it. I know people around that have routers.

a mile away seems really far to pick anything up. thats a strange thing to be finding random networks when you live in the middle of nowhere.

It's possible that you can pick up a sniff of it. People with "cantennas" can go a mile or more on 802.11 signals.

Certain kinds of weather can increase the range of radio type signals especially within line of sight. On the other hand weather can also shorten the range.

Thunderstorms do that. One thing that is pretty cool is CB radios. I was picking up people in Tennessee one time in New York state. The radio signals and the weather bounce the signals off of the stratosphere and carry them abnormally long distances.

What you have experienced is rare but has been reported before. It is a phenomenon related to St-Elmo's fire and is not unlike ball lightning, where the WiFi signal condenses in a ball and starts to roam. This may have been the signal from miles and miles away which has ended up in your place. As you detect the signal it slowly looses energy and fades in a few days. Strangely enough the reports are dated arounf the change from March to April. Strongest signals have been reported just after midnight on the 31st March.

Man, it happened to me more then once. Freaky stuff. It is probably what you have said because I cannot connect to the things when I find them.
So is there any articles about this?
