I assume you mean none of the hot keys is working at all - Fn-F8 otherwise is the un-mute key.

Click on the sound icon in your tray, and the volume control should appear; on the 'playback' tab, click on the speaker icon below the volume sliders and it should un-mute it.

Then you'll need to sort out your hotkeys!

i can get the sliders to increse the volume, it is the hot key Fn-F8 and Fn-volume up-down witch will not work, the others hot keys work fine. This problem has seemed to have stopped sykpe working, this is doing my head-in, thanks

I'm not quite clear whether you've got sound unmuted now (see the 'click the sound icon' bit)?

Hang on, I'm getting lost here.

If it shows as unmuted in the sound app, does the sound actually work?

If the hotkeys aren't working, how come something is showing up when you use them?

    OK, two things to try.

One is to use the terminal and enter this:
    Code:
    alsamixer
which will start the underlying sound controller. Check there that 'master' and 'PCM' controls are set to appropriate levels (you use the arrow keys to move between columns, and to increase/decrease volume; the ESC key closes the program).

Second: people have reported that setting the sound level in the media master program supplied by Acer makes the sound level 'stick' after closing that program. You could try opening it, playing something and adjusting the cound, athen see if that has solved the problem.

i tried alsamixer, but all igot was
*** PLUSEAUDIO: Unable to connect: Connection refused

alsamixer: function snd_clt_open failed for default: Connection refused

i also tried the M Player, no luck there,,,,
i wont give up, i am sure this problem can be fixed,,

Pulseaudio isn't even installed on my system, and it does seem to have something of a reputation for problems! It might be worth trying uninstalling it....
