A fortnight after I bought my notebook, I opened it and the screen had gone. The man at Comet announced customer damage, this was confirmed by Acer. There was a vertical crack in the top right hand corner about 1 inch following, just underneath the metal facia. I never break anything. This machine was never off my desk.
It seems that the damage occurred must have occurred opening or shutting the lid. I cannot account for it. Can anyone else?. I am cerainly not having a repair if the product can be this easily broken. I would like to know - is this item Fit For Purpose?

I throw mine around like a rag doll. It seems pretty solid to me. It's still possible that your unit was damaged when you got it, and it took a while for the damage to 'show'.

I have two Acer Ones. And two full grown labrador retriever dogs. They can jump on them and not break them.

Perhaps your hinge is a little stiff and you exert more force than normal to open it? If that seems OK do you open it by lifting one corner? That would put a twisting force on the screen. I suggest the best way to open any laptop is by lifting at the centre or both corners simultaneously (tricky if you have to hold the thing down with your third hand). Once the screen is cracked it will get worse until it goes black around that area. Ask me how I know (a Dell which slid off the roof of a car onto the hood, slid off that, and then down a steep driveway). At first it seemed only scratched but eventually a crack progressed across one corner of the screen, and then the blackness spread over a couple of months.

dirk's explanation (damaged before you got it, only showing up now) sounds like the most likely to me considering that you have not really transported it about. It *seems* quite solid to me too. It could have been damaged in shipping. Perhaps if you tried again to communicate with Acer at a different level, being very polite and totally clear, they might reconsider making you pay for the repair (which is what I am understanding).

I dropped mine on concrete from waist high not two hours after I bought it. No damage.

I opened up the box wrong, and it spilled right out.

I had a few choice words, but all is well.

I keep mine on my bed as I use it before going to sleep sometimes, I dose off and it ends up under the pillow with me sleeping on top of it and never had a problem

I doubt it's that easy to crack the screen...Maybe someone tampered with it, closed it, hope you wouldn't notice? I haven't dropped mine . But from what I can tell, it's built pretty sturdily. But then again, I'm a computer freak. I freak out when I spit on the screen, or close the cover without slowly putting it down...Haha.

Soit seems the thing can take a thump but not a torque. I confess to being a bit frustrated with Linpus - it was closing down of its own accord. The point of damage was the extreme right top corner where I would lever it up as one would turn a page. I can easily be that clumsy. On that basis I will forego the repair and look for a different product.
I regret not having slept with it before we split though......

Well, the one probably disagreed with the way that you opened it, but I must admit my one gets a helluva lot of knocks and jolt, but doesn't have a mark on it.
