How do connections become auto?

    So I've had my netbook for three months, no problems no fuss - I set up my wireless connection and a number of others and they seem to (excuse the pun) become auto connections - so if they are present, it connects.

    Forward to christmas - two netbooks for my nieces, one does the same, the other doesn't - while it keeps the settings, you have to manually connection.

    What am I missing?
