I want to be able to enter text in Japanese (Hirigana / Katakana), but Japanese is not listed in the available input langauges ? Do I need to download some files, and if so from where to where ?

oop, its actually easier than i thought cause it's already in there...I'm totally new to this linux thing...

    - go to add/remove programs from the advanced right click menu *see: viewtopic.php?f=17&t=469
    - go to the "List" tab, and find and enable/install "scim-anthy", which is the japanese input engine, enable scim-lang-japanese if it isn't
    - reboot and 'anthy' should be in your scim preferences, already enabled (press ctrl-shift to switch to jp input method)

wataru, I've also found that I can use the 'yum' installed from a terminal window to install ;)

As root, just run 'yum install scim-anthy'

    Thanks

Just combining the above, into the steps that worked for me:

    sudo yum scim-anthy

from the settings menu, click on language-settings: this brings up the scim configuration menu. IMEngine - Global, first disable everything to be safe and keep things clean, then select Japanese.

    Reboot.

In any text editor, Ctrl + space now brings up the little Japanese IME toolbar.
