How to backup Win XP 120gb AAO to Flash Drive?

    I know there are several threads touching somewhat on the above topic, but reading them has left me thoroughly confused. I have a AAO 120gb Win Xp model. Because it was a refurbished one, I do not have the recovery cds (which I know I'd have to buy an external drive to use), nor does my on computer recovery program give me the option of burning recovery discs through the Acer on board recovery program. I do have available a couple of 16gb usb flash drives to use as backup media. Can someone supply me with a way to back up at least my operating system and key drivers so that if my hard drive crashes, I can begin to restore my system.
