Edit: This thread is several months old and Linpus has had many updates since these instructions were written. Some or all of these instructions might have been broken or may not work anymore after new updates. Try these settings at your own risk!

Didn't find a topic about this one yet, so I thought I'd post one.

I prefer to keep some sort of security on my computers, and the One logging in automatiacally really bugs me, but after hours of surfing on the web and looking through the system I havent found a way to disable the feature. The system does have GDM installed, but GDM says autologin is disabled, so it's made somewhere else...

Has anyone found a way to do it or maybe found out that it can not be done at all..?

Oh, and I tried the BIOS password, but it sucked big time because it only supports 8 characters and they have to be IN CAPITALS which is pretty annoying.

    Re: How to disable autologin?

gdm is installed but is not running.

X is started directly with the call to xinit in /etc/rc.d/rc.S

You could try commenting thta line out and running gdm from there maybe?

    Re: How to disable autologin?

Just tried running gdm from rc.S and it worked fine for me.

    What specifically is going wrong?

    Re: How to disable autologin?

What kind of edits did you do to the rc.S?
I was trying to look for something connected with autologin from there, but now I see you meant that I should run gdm from there (I can sometimes be a bit illiterate :p ). Can you post a little description of what you did to it and how it affected your system?

I'm just a bit worried that I'll end up locking my whole system if I screw with it.

    Thanks for your help!

    Re: How to disable autologin?

    Sure,

    Edit /etc/rc.d/rc.S

Find the line '/usr/bin/xinit -- -br>/dev/null 2>&1 &' and comment it out (Stick a # at the start of the line).

On a new line after that, put

    /usr/sbin/gdm

    Save & reboot.

Remember that the username is 'user' and the password is whatever you set up during install.

I would also comment out the DontVTSwitch line in /etc/X11/xorg.conf, so if the GUI has any major problems you can get to a text console and re-edit files from there.

    Re: How to disable autologin?

Just tested what you said and it works like a charm!
GDM is enabled and I get a login-screen on boot-up, perfect :ugeek:

    Thanks once more!

I was looking for a way to do this also and the solution described here works great !

The DontVTSSwitch set to "no" also works fine. Xfce4 is running in console 7 (Alt+Control+F7) and the shell is in console 1 (Alt+Control+F1) -- which has the bootup Acer background and looking funny, but otherwise fully functional.

    Thanks !

I followed the instructions in this thread and it worked perfectly.

...at least it did until I updated my AAOne using the program under setup (at least I hope that's what it is called; I run a German version)
Now I can't log in anymore, which is rather annoying. It simply won't take my ID and Password anymore.

    Any suggestions?

    - Update -
It seems as if the Update has somehow mixed up my A and my Q Key.
Once Logged in, I can change it in the bar below (Language settings for the Keyboard). Unfortunately, that setting doesn't apply to the login screen...
But at least, I can login again... By pressing q instead of a.
(changing the language on the loginscreen doesn't work either x_X)

    That's not good :(

If you have disabled the DontVT line in xorg.conf, you can hit CTRL-ALT-F1 to drop to the console then re-instate the xinit line into rc.S

    Thanks for the tip!

For some reason gdmsetup does not work. I get a window stating
    Code:
GDM (GNOME Display Manager) is not running
Why is this? (I would like to change some settings...)

When enabling switching to virtual terminals (by commenting out the DontVTSwitch line in /etc/X11/xorg.conf), I do get a console with Ctrl-Alt-F1. But why is it already logged in as user? This seems like a security problem...

EDIT: In fact, if I log out in the console, I am automatically logged in again, with the nuisance that another X session tries to start... I end up with duplicates of some of the autostart programs.

We can use 'userinfo' to add user real name and 'gdmphotosetup' to change user face on gdm.

    Re: How to disable autologin?

I edited /etc/rc.d/rc.S, only I tried to use KDM instead since I've got KDE installed, but now my netbook just stops on the screen with the Acer logo on a blue logo. I commented out the DontVTSwitch line - how do I get to the text console to edit files?
