So having this new sub-forum, I guess the first request would be to have a stick with a "how to" install windows 7 on aa1 guide. Of course, forget the whole download thing, just.. when we have windows 7, how to install it. (And how to install it dual boot)

    Thanks!

    its not hard
if u dont know how to install an operating system then dont use windows 7
conversely, if you have windows 7 you obviously know how to install an operating system, unless youre some rndom trend follower.

if those somehow turn out to be wrong, then follow vista guides

Pardon me for risking a boot from the board, but did someone piss in your cornflakes this morning? Seems like a fairly benign request, and it's only easy if you know how. I did it from an external USB optical drive, but I'll do it from a USB 4gb thumb drive, and post the "How To"... (If I didn't offend the Gods Of The Boards and get the boot)...

All I meant was if you want to mess around with unreleased betas, then you are obviously computer competent/advanced, and so should be able to work it out yourself

The "how to" is actually quite simple.... Burn the ISO that you have downloaded to a DVD using ImgBurn or another program. Put it in the external CD drive, push the F12 button and select boot from USB CD/DVD. And instal as you would install Windows Vista or XP. If you don't have an external DVD Drive, then buy one... it only costs 16 pounds! http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/USB-External-...3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=66:2|65:2|39:1|240:1318

Hey, I found a how-to that was written for Vista, but I just tested it on my AAO with Windows 7 build 6956, and a 4gb thumbdrive, and it worked just great!

http://kurtsh.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!DA410C7F7E038D!1665.entry I figure, the more the merrier! Of course, I still had to put in the Atheros drivers, but the ethernet works out of the box... I see no reason to write it up from scratch, when this gentleman did such a fine job...

And hey, rory, I may have either had too much, or too little coffee, that response just seemed a tad across the line on the cranky side, since this forum is supposed to be a place where users help each other learn what they need to know. We didn't all start out as experts on any dang thing; someone, somewhere along the way, decided to help us when we needed it...

Oh, yeah, and BTW, if you would like the "how-to" on getting the Atheros WiFi drivers installed, check out my post here: http://www.aspireoneuser.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=70&t=8155&p=53033#p53033...

Some people report them working straight away, I myself have not had that luck, and the post above is the process I used to put the drivers in properly... Windows 7 runs quite snappy on 1gb of ram, as well, I'm happy to report!

Well, I just realized something... I used another computer to do the formatting of the thumbdrive, and that computer had an optical drive in it. I should assume, for the sake of argument, that your AAO is the only computer you have. I am using a ZG5 with 1gb of RAM, and a 160gb HDD...

Let's assume that the AAO is the *only* computer you have, and that you have an ISO of Windows 7 (build 6956 is the one that I'm using...) on that computer.

You will need something like Daemon Tools (it is freeware): http://www.daemon-tools.cc/dtcc/download.php?mode=ViewCategory&catid=5. This will allow you to "mount" an ISO file, and your computer will treat it as an optical drive.

Once you have that program installed, and have mounted the Windows 7 ISO, you will be able to follow the "how-to" that I linked to in the earlier post. Pay very close attention to the warnings in that how-to, because there is some real danger that you could wipe out a drive that you had no intention of wiping out if you aren't careful!

I'm more than happy to walk through the steps... There are tutorials in multiple places that can probably articulate better than I can on how to mount an ISO file using Daemon Tools (their website being one of them).

As for the dual-boot, it will automatically dual-boot with XP (assuming you create a separate partition for Windows 7 first).

    HTH
