How to install VDR?

Hello, I would like to install and use VDR ([URL]http://www.cadsoft.de/vdr[/URL]) on my linpus aspire one. I've installed it from the package manager but when I try to start vdr from the terminal it says: [i]vdr: please turn off UTF-8 before starting VDR[/i] So how can I start vdr? Do I have to change the character set to something else than UTF-8, and how is that done?
