O.k., I've followed the steps, but when i get to the RUN program section, it starts the splash screen but says I must have administrator privileges to run the Universal Customizer in the center box. I am the administrator on my own home PC here... any suggestions?

Managed to get XP installed following the steps in the article :)

I used nLite to slipstream the drivers and post SP3 update pack and remove some of the un-necessary stuff from Windows.

I was initially worried it wasn't going to work as I got the BSOD error even with my external USB HDD connected in addition to the USB key however after switching the AA1 off and trying setup again everything worked.

-E- Forgot to say thanks so...thanks for the guide.

All who got BSOD problem, just plug diffrent stuffs into USB port. I tested with 2 usb key and 2 mp3 player, none of them worked it out. Then i plugged my nokia phone, and chosen "massmemory storage" from phone, and it made my XP installation work.

So test ALSO with your digital camera and mobile phone, they probably fix you bluescreen (BSOD) problem.

I think this is what the whole issue is... I'm betting if we do this to the iso image we "burn" or customize into the U3 partition we can install windows from our U3 USB drives.

I'd try it if I were nto so busy latley but i think this is the solution to all the blue screens of deaths most of us where getting... I know its an old post but. I was always curious on what the issue was

    Link to solution below:

I couldn't resist... I stayed up late to try it and sure enough it worked. no more BSOD after "Starting Windows"... I can now install XP from U3 CD partion woohoo!!!.... and it is normal for the customizer to hang at 50 -> 53% when customizing the CD partion.. its just that the iso file is over 600mb takes a while to write to some older U3 drives.. mine's pretty old and slow at writing. newer ones should take alot less time.

Finally the issue is solved maybe make a sticky for it and spread the word?

    Update...

Doing this method caused to be prompted to install unsigned drivers twice during install.. but I skipped the part to expand and modify the 3 files:

    usb.in_
    usbport.in_
    usbstor.in_

but I did add usbboot.ini and edited dosnet.inf and txtsetup.inf and the prompting was gone and it still installs all the way.. glad to have a way to install Winxp on my AOA150 if need be and to have a mini cdrom emulator handy :p

Hello all total newbie here, none oof this makes sense to me is this something you can buy U3 usb key??? i have just inheirited a Aspire 1 with broken screen running linux. I want to install a printer at some point, but from what i can see, its a bit klingon, :? :? i dont get it at all, hoping that XP would be easier to use like a normal laptop. please correct me if i am wrong, but i cant see any way to install software on these things!!! Mine is a Zg5 i think.
Can someone advise me please, i am ok with normal computers!!! but i like the look of the Aspire and the size is cute as well... or should i just fix the screen (easy) and sell the beastie???
    THANKS
