    The LED might not work, but you can disable and enable the wifi from windows, just by right clicking the wireless networking icon in the botton right and clicking disable.

    I get the hal.dll error when I go to use the GUI setup. The text setup has completed, and it has rebooted. I select the GUI setup, and it immediately gives me the below message:

    Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
    <windows root>\system32\hal.dll
    Please re-install a copy of the above file.

    I redid my USB key twice as per the directions in the post here.

    Hope someone can assist.

    Thanks

    Try to reinstall windows. When I first did it I got the same problem. I then just redid that last second part of the installation and it worked out well. When the Computer boots up pick that USB GUI installation.

    That's what I mean, I have'nt got an icon to click on. If I go on to control panel, there's a wireless network set up wizard but I don't think that's what I want?

    All the stuff thats on the acer website, EXCEPT the 3G drivers and the eRecovery, you'll do well to update them all :)

    EDIT: I would also download mozzila firefox :D

    I have an aa1 acer xp os dated 7/16/08 which I believe has issues interfacing to the internal mic. If I can lay my hands on an acer xp os dated october 08 or newer, I'd like to install it instead. (You can check which xp version you have by c:, sys info, os) Would I remove the old version or install over it? Does re-installing xp affect the applications already working (open office, firefox, skype, etc)?

    I have the exact same problem !
    I'm trying to do a multi-boot linpus/xp using two tutorials, this one for installing winxp and this one -> viewtopic.php?f=47&t=8944&start=120 for the multi-boot.

    All went smoothely for the text installation, system rebooted, the got the hal.dll error reported :/

    Booted back to linpus, mounted my windows fat32 partition (/dev/sda2) and found my boot.ini with this settings :

    [boot loader]
    timeout=1
    default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(2)\WINDOWS
    [operating systems]
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

    Hurray i though, just need to change to rdisk(0) and pb solved, well no... rdisk(1) or (0) same pb hal.dll is missing... meaning windows cannot find the fat32 partition :/

    I'm now looking at my windows/system32 folder, hal.dll is there so this is not a faulty installation pb, and i'm lost, what could be the pb then ?

    Any help available ?

    cheers

    i did everything in the tut...

    there is only 1 thing i did that i have my doubts about...
    after the TXT install, you have to do the Gui install right? well... when the text install was done,i hit the F12 button to choose the Gui install. But... i waited too long selecting it, and i got an error because it was trying to boot up.
    Could that be my problem?
    after that shit, i rebooted, and selected the Gui installer and everything went great. When the install was done, it booted up into xp (with alot of error messages) and i edited the boot.ini file.
    Then.... i rebooted..... and now my laptop is dead.

    I'm gonna buy an external dvd player today, works that fine? no hassle with boot loaders or anything?
    I think that will be the only method to revive my aspire one......

    YES! it worked. Strange it didn't work the previous time...

    I think you should change your Tut a bit... the part: "follow the on screen instructions" It can be a bit strange..
