    hi
yes, all can do, i have the cyberlink power dvd8 pre install from acer. And it does not do the work.
To write as a normal user,,, acer should make it right. Meaning -with the software that is provided the demo it Should be working.
the netbook at 350 $ or 399 euro , is made for the starters not to the experts that go on internet for special install,,,
and to be more simple youtube HQ should have to play from day one.
(avi.mpg.mp4 wma. all play well. dvd played from extern play very good.)
its for the buyer to make their mind. And as you see on ACER support. There is nothing on the subject.
So if the company doesn’t care why their future customer should put himself in an investigation mode,
Checking crazy internet side, download FREE programs that will kill their system. Spending hours on the issue (re install again and again) and in the end think that if they buy is in a different shop the other netbook from the same manufacture would do the job. Shame on Acer. I have seen manufactures jokes but Acer made the best one ever. Never I read that new customer ask the other if the same model have the same cpu,,,,
Acer know there is an issue with video play back. i didn’t wrote the " View high-def contact on the large led backlight display" on the netbook description ,,,,

hey srosh, i can comlpletely understand that you are angry. The way to get your HD-videos running is mess. But this is not a problem only for Acer, all Netbooks/Devices with the GMA500 graphic chip have this issues. The Dell Mini 10, 12, Sony Vaio P ect. forums are full with discussions about the video playback.

Hopefully, windows 7 will clear things up. It comes with built-in Hardware Video Acceleration (H.264) and so you just can use Windows Media Player 12 for your HD files. Out of the box, you don´t need third party players or codecs. Even divx-hd works in this: http://labs.divx.com/mkvwin7preview

Acutally i´m running Windows 7 (RC 7100) and it works very well for me. If you want Youtube-HD, even there is a solution until Adobe will update their flash player to support Video Hardware Acceleration: viewtopic.php?f=87&t=15842

    Greetings,

I agree with you srosh, that Intel (who sells the chipset) and netbook makers (Acer, Dell, Sony, etc) should take responsibility for this mess and offer a simple solution for users.

By the way, the file you linked to (above) does *not* play on my Acer 751, which can play other HD Content. I have no idea what the underlying format for this MKV file is.

You can try these HD files on your machine: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/musicandvideo/hdvideo/contentshowcase.aspx
They work on my machine using PowerDVD8. But again, I had to mess around with a lot of settings before I got things working...

(hopefully the link is fixed now...)

I just don't get it. I have Windows 7 RC 7100, and I'm not getting smooth playback with any format HD in Windows Media Player 12. Is there some setting I need to change, or does my 751 just hate me?

Sounds a bit strange, but we will get this done, i promise! I just deinstalled all alternative video players and codecs on my Windows 7 i was playing around the last days. You don´t need them, really. There is no need for cyberlink, MPC-HC and so on. Windwos 7 (RC 7100) comes with all you need.

To prove that i´m not talking Bullshit ;) Here a screenshot: 1080p Trailer in Quicktime (.mov) from Apple Trailers. Playing in Windows Media Player 12 and using Microsofts internal H.264 decoder which will make use of Hardware Video acceleration.
    http://img43.imageshack.us/img43/9811/g ... ktime1.jpg

    This is my setup: http://img513.imageshack.us/img513/6577 ... ktime2.jpg

Hamsterhead, which video driver did you have installed? I use the latest from Intel: http://downloadcenter.intel.com/filter_ ... &submit=Go! its the ....1005 Version.

To test, here is a 1080p Trailer (Transformers - Revenge of the Fallen) http://www.moviemaze.de/media/trailer/d ... n_1920.mov
Please download and try it. Rightclick on the file and choose "Open with....Windows Media Player"
There is no way any Netbook CPU or software decoder can handle this file. Windows 7 with the GMA500 will do very well :D Remember, almost all HD-content on the internet (Youtube HD, DivxHD or Apple Trailers) is coded in H.264, so this is the thing you want to get work.

    Greetings,
    Felix

    Hi from sunny holland.
Update after 2 weeks working with 751.
I bought diginote extern dvd player . and Bluetooth device(my acer didn’t came with it)
I have install Vista business sp2 legitimate, and compare all with xp3. ( I play with a Toshiba 160g who is with same spec as the original Seagate HD)
First all work. Visual vista is looking a little better. But on battery life time you might have 1-2 hour less.
With all vista media player and the different driver it all run more slow. End I do have 2 G ram.
I could run all over clock programs that I have.
I use the setfsbtray that someone wrote for msi wind.
    http://www.mediafire.com/Draves
download it and install it in program file .
copy all setfsb version 88 and overwrite files into the setfsbtray .
Then add the setfsb-edited text file , add the ICS9LPRS365BGLF line in.(you might need to first copy the file to a different location in order to be able to change and save it.)
Run the program and you can have 3 level of over clock.
Work great for me . when starting windows it’s on 1330. I have the 1410 and the 1490 . foe medium and high. So I can use it only when I need it.
The program work for xp and vista. But with vista you need to give the administrator green light all the time.

After comparing the vista and the xp . I choose to use the xp3 . why?
Simple /faster/ and battery time longer.
When 7 is out there will install. Only due of the fact I have 2 HD and can play( it’s the best back up too)
And its cost less than extern HD. If I realy think of making the acer faster I would buy the WD 250GB 7200 rpm. That would make the file transfer dam faster. But its all for the future.
The 751 it stile a great netbook. Great screen , great keyboard. No noise. Stable as a rock.
All work on it. Laser printer. Scanners. Logitech Bluetooth mouse, Samsung /pleomax Bluetooth streo headset. Dvd extern. Even with all in the battery life is great. And above all he does not get worm and noise level is very low.

Thanks for the review and the tip with SetFSB. I set up dual boot with XP and Win7 to compare each. Found out that "Windows tasks" works more than twice as fast on XP than on Win7. Used CrystalMark (GDI-Benckmark) and got a 2660 score in XP (...1009 driver) compared to 900 GDI score in Win7 (...1005 driver). Until there are better drivers for Vista/Win7, i´d reccomend to stay with XP.

BTW: Here a photo, what you can´t do with other (conventional) Netbooks:

Perfect 1080p (H.264) playback on a 24" FullHD TFT while surfing on your Acer 751 :D

Here is a simple way to play flawlessly HD content on this netbook:
    1. Download k-lite codec pack and install it.
    2. Get the latest version of Media Player Classic Home Cinema and place it in the Media Player Classic subfolder in the installation of the Klite. This is important as the subfolder of MPC in Klite has a couple of DX9 dlls that are also required by MPC HC to prevent nags about DX compatibility.
    3. Find, download and install the HDPack2.2.EXE. This has the best CODECs for HD playback that really work on this netbook. I took it from here http://www.skystar.org/arsiv/index.php? ... sortMode=m

Enjoy 1080p at full screen without any frame rate loss and no overclocking.
