I've installed 3 Windows programs, running under WINE and they all seem to work fine. Unfortunately I have so far only managed to start them via the terminal or via the advanced menu (right click etc) What I would like to do is get them starting from an icon on the standard desktop - say in the 'Work' section. I have found the group-app.xml file and can see where the existing desktop applications are listed so I'm presuming that I need some sort of start file ending in '.desktop'

Is this something I have to script and save somewhere prior to editing the group-app.xml file? If so - where and how?

What about choosing /making the actual icon? How is this done?

I've done all of this successfully on an Asus Eeepc but of course it's a different flavour of Linux and the procedures are not the same at all.

One other thing - I can't manage to get an updated version of Wine working on Linpus - the repo seems out of date and I don't know enough about compiling to do it this way. I'd like version 1.0 or newer if poss - any hints?

I'm very much a Linux newbie so explanation needs to be simple!

    Hi ASPECTS

I recently installed version 1.1.9 of wine by typing the following into Terminal,

sudo yum -y install wine and then Enter

Here is a link to an example of how to add icons to the standard Linpus desktop.

    http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2008/09/05 ... page3.html

I have the standard XFCE desktop and have installed an icon for “Wine File”. The Icon is found in /usr/share/applications within File system after installing Wine. This can be dragged and dropped on the desktop I have.
If I click on the icon Wine is opened up and displays a screen with various functions and 2 panes. The left hand pane displays the file structure of the Aspire (under disk Z) and if you click on the folder that contains your Windows application its contents are displayed in the right hand pane. You then need to find the .EXE file and open it up.

For example I have a Windows password program I keep on a USB stick so that I can access various passwords from my Windows PC's and the Acer. I find /media/disk (the folders that contain data on the USB) on the left pane, open it and then find the required .EXE file.

The “Wine File” icon is not very colourful but it can be changed by right clicking it and using “Edit Launcher”, well at least on the standard XFCE desktop and I assume this equally applies to the default Acer one.

I am new to Wine and still trying to understand all its abilities but I hope the above is of some use to you and best wishes.
