I recently got a new Lenovo 13 with middle of the road specs and am upgrading the RAM and storage.

The RAM was a breeze and no problem.

The storage on the other hand is worrying me. I am pretty novice and need some advice on how to go about swapping the SSD. From other posts I concluded that I want to make a back-up image of the current SSD and use that to reboot the new one once installed.

So my question is how do I go about doing this. I understand how to make a back-up image onto an external drive, but beyond that am not entirely sure what to do.

Do I need to make a recovery disk? And if so can it be a bootable USB because the Lenovo 13 doesn't have a disk drive.

Would really appreciate a step-by-step run down of how to do this, or a link to something along those lines.

    Thanks for any advice.

Welcome to the laptop forums site

The first thing you will need is a connection cable like this one it's a
    usb to sata cable.

ALWAYS SHOP AROUND, THIS IS AN EXAMPLE OF THE CABLE.

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/USB-To-SA...295284?hash=item25a82cc134:g:eNQAAOSwZG9WjT4b

    RE-EDITED 12.59PM

I WILL RETURN SHORTLY WITH RECOMMENDED SOFTWARE
THEY HAVE ALTERED THE SOFTWARE I WAS RECOMMENDING

    UPDATED POST 13.35PM

    Aomei partition assistant standard

    http://www.disk-partition.com/

    or

    http://www.partitionwizard.com/free-partition-manager.html

It's called Mini partition wizard free

Connect your new drive to the cable, then using Aomei partition assistant standard
    choose migrate os to ssd.

When the software has finished swap out the drives, done!

Sorry but all of the known software I would recommend has finished offering
their software for free for the function migrate os to ssd.

If you are only copying ssd to ssd drives, and have access to either
a large usb drive or external hard drive

There's another way but it's a little more complicated,
    using backupper

    http://www.backup-utility.com/free-backup-software.html

Choose backup, then system backup, in step 2 choose the external drive
    as the destination. Start backup.

Next in the utilities section choose create bootable media you will need a usb
    flash drive create the media.

When finished swap over your old ssd and install your new ssd.
plug in the usb drive then boot from the usb.

You may have to press f2 to enter the boot sequence on power up.

Your system should boot into the backupper program from the usb
choose restore, the alter the path it's the drive you copied the backup to.

It will then restore your complete system over to the new drive.
