Having somehow managed to install VLC it has now decided to only play sound and no pictures so I thought I would uninstall and download a new copy. When I go to the Add/Remove Software part of package manager I cannot see VLC to remove it. I'm guessing there has to be a hidden step that needs to be taken or, am I stuck with having a non functioning version?
Also, the version I downloaded had its own install system built in but I cannot now remember/locate where I got it from. All the versions I have found seem to require some kind of extraction process to load them. How does that process work. I have tried searching the archives for answers to these questions but have had about as much success as I have had with anything else to do with Linux....not too much. Many thanks and apologies if the answers are already published.

Did you get it from the Acer website ? In that case you should be able to remove it using liveupdate...

    If not, try typing
    Code:
    sudo yum remove vlc
    or
    Code:
    sudo rpm -e vlc
    in a terminal.

What message do you get if you try to install vlc like e.g. detailed here ?

Hi Grim, the remove function worked - thank you.
When I entered the command sudo yum update fedora-release - the message I got back was "Could not find update match for fedora-release
    No Packages marked for Update"

I then went on to your next lines of command but I was not sure if that very long string is all one long command line or if it is in two sections. Anyway, I enetered from "sudo rpm ivh2.... to "noarch.rpm"
    and got the message back:
"error: skipping http://download .......transfer failed - Unknown or unexpected error"

Pending a reply from you I will revisit the Acer website and try to download their vlc again.

    Many thanks for your help.

Hi Grim, have now downloaded vlc.sh.zip from Acer and it is sitting in the downloaded files section. I'm not sure how to unzip it and whilst I must have done it before I think it must have been by luck rather than knowledge. If you can assist that would be great.

It is better NOT to use the Acer VLC, since that is the one without support for patented codecs.
There is a way around that in the comments of this article: http://macles.blogspot.com/2008/10/new- ... l#comments , but using another installation method is better..

Look at the link with the loooonnngggg instructions again - I changed the wording somewhat. Alternatvely download the Fusion repository info from http://rpmfusion.org/Configuration

Hi again, followed your instructions which seem to have worked as I now have in the My Disk section of File manager an icon (looks like a gearwheel) for vlc but if I double click on it nothing happens. When I managed to load vlc before I ended up with a traffic cone icon in the Fun section of the desktop. I guess I've done something wrong although all the loading went ok. Uninstall and start again?
