My networked HP printer is on a Mac Airport Express.

    1. Open terminal type "yum update cups"
    2. Go to the printers and add a new printer using jetdirect
    3. Use Hostname 10.0.1.1 and port 9100 (or 9101)

I don't think the name will be the same for you but the jetdirect might help you out.

It's been a couple of weeks, so I may not remember exactly, but here goes.

From the XFCE menu, go to system--> add/remove software
    Install hplip
    exit
Go back to the XFCE menu to settings--> HP Device Manager

Now you should be able to set up your printer.

hey narticulate, looks like i gave you some bad advice. running from the menu doesn't work because you need admin privileges. to get around that, type alt+f2 to get the run program dialog and type sudo hp-setup to get the setup working. your network printer should be found automatically.

Jim thanks for the help. i actually have been learning linux bits and peices so i just tried to sudo hplip again and chose the fedora 7 auto intall. works fine so i'll stick with that.
these dependencies are crazy though! installing one small component can mean installing 4 or 5 other things to get the one thing working. the automation is tremendous though. can't imagine how bad itd be trying to install without yum.

I've entered that command but Acer says:
    Code:
Could not find update match for cups
    No Packages marked for Update
And JetDirect option has not appeared. Only SMB and IPP are available.

    How can I fix it?

have you tried downloading it directly from hp in their support section? That's what I did.
    http://www.hp.com/#Support
just fill in your printer information and away you go. It even supports scanners, memory card slots, etc... I think there was some issue with fax support though.
