Thanks to much help from this forum I've been able to connect using a Huawei K3520 by using usb_modeswitch, wvdial and configuring ip-up.local etc.

This has lasted about 4 days...

I've recently accepted a bunch of updates - of which 180058 (... wireless driver) and 180062 (... huawei 3G) were two.
    I'm stuffed again.

I have no additional capability in the 'New Connection' dialog of the Connection Manager... just LAN, WLAN PPPoE & WLAN+PPPoE
usb_modeswitch does not report any errors, but
    ls /dev/ttyUSB*
shows no devices, consequently wvdial has nothing to work with.

Any ideas before I back out these two updates (which I'm fervently hoping will cure the problem)

    TIA

The huawei 3G update installed a new programme called "Mobile Partner" and placed a new icon in the connect area of the standard desktop. Ther is also an entry when using the advanced mode by right clicking on the desktop.

You no longer need additonal software / drivers to run a 3G stick on the AAO. Just plug your modem into the USB port, fire up the Mobile Partner software, create a profile (first time only) and press connect. There is no need to use the connection manager on the AAO anymore.

That's the theory.. but I have tried Mobile Partner, it finds my E169G no problem, but there is absolutely no signal strength at any time, under any setting!

Whereas, I fire up Vodafone's mobile driver, connects straight away, no probs. Strange.

Perhaps there will be another update.

Hopefully it will be fixed soon. Its very strange that Vodafone's 3G app works so well, yet I can't connect to a network on a Huawei modem with their own software.. :?

If I were you I would forget about Mobile Partner and use Vodaphone Connect Card ALL i386 version (download from Betavine). I installed it and it set up everything for me automatically, really easy.

The Mobile Partner is terrific, was using gnome ppp, but no stats on usage - now all is clear.

have to change default setting for "three" network by setting up a profile with the following settings:

APN Static and type in "three.co.uk"
    Access Number *99#
    User Name three
    Password three

and change the authentication to PAP

    It's that simple - enjoy.

    Thanks to all......

I had the same problem after the upgrade, didn't know about the new program.

Now that you have pointed me to it my E220 works great. Just plug the dongle in, wait for the 'cd' to appear so I know it is loaded then run the Mobile Partner software. Connects every time, no problem.

Hmm, I'm not a fan of this "Mobile Partner" additional software. All it did for me was make the process more complex, as well as fail to connect. The software also makes no mention of HSDPA in the available settings windows, just GSM and CDMA.

I'm so sick of these half-baked solutions from VENDORS. The problem with the update is that it inserts some udev rules which stop the dongle from mapping to /dev/ttyUSB0 and /dev/ttyUSB1. I can only surmise that the Huawei Mobile partner software does this when it runs.

For any of you now unable to connect using Gnome-PPP after the update, just do the following:

    Code:
    mv /etc/udev/rules.d/10-Huawei-Datacard.rules /etc/udev

After this, remove and re-insert the USB dongle. You no longer need to use usb_modeswitch, because a daemon is installed by the updates which performs this function for you. For reference, it is located at /sbin/HWActivator and is called from /etc/rc.local

Anyway ultimately for me the point is moot because I'm going to install Gentoo Linux, something I know I can make work and not worry about vendor updates trashing my config.

Why is it this is working for everyone except me - sob!
I have the weirdest situation where the modem seems to connect (light solid cyan) on my 160G sodem with 3. But the nitification icons tell me that I have no connection on the tool tray (or whatever you call it on Linux). The connection shows it is there though on the Mobile Partner icon.
BUT the strangest thing is that I can start up Skype and aMSN and use them no trouble despite allegedly having no connection! Is this magic?
    Someone help please!

Hi karenbee, I think I have exactly the same issue, where I am connected via the 3G dongle and browsing etc happily, yet the 'Network' icon on the bottom panel shows as 'unconnected', and in Mobile Partner, there is an icon showing an active connection yet absolutely zero signal strength.. :?

My N958GB phone in the same location always shows between 2/3rds and full 3G strength signal bars, so why it's not showing up on Mobile Partner is strange. Just a software thing I guess, I'm happy as long as I'm connected!

    Hi friends,

I am extremely frustrated about the mobile connect dy parameters, and the driver says it connected, there is no sign of life on firefox. funnily enough (or not really funny) I can send SMS-ile connect mailsystem....

I have tried to download vodafones latest RPM-driver for fedora core 8.0, but can't install. it always tells me ... can't resolve dependencies...

unfortunately, vodafone don't offe the older driver any longer that wasn't rpm.

isn't there ONE linux programme that finally works? does anybody< know where I could get this old driver and how to install it?

I tried Xubuntu, but that is even more complicated, and neither WLAN nor mobile broadband works

please help. I do need the mobile connect modem quite often as a journalist. it works beautifully even on the train on my win XP-pro laptop. why shouldn't it on this one here???

    Cheers
    Christian
