    am 78, a linux newbie (but the brain still kind of working)...eager to learn new stuff .... but this defeats me..


    I know the question has been asked before amd a trillion different answer provided but somehow, whatever I try to do...my modem is just not being detected. I have tried Phone Partner, Gnome.ppp. wvdial..... I think I have tried so much that more than likely I have made irrepairable damage somewhere and corrupted some files.
    I know the dongle works.On a windows O/s (XP and Vista), the whole thing works. So the sim is not damaged.
    I ran lsub

    then I ran dsmeg (i read somewhere that if the line /dev/ttyUSB0 showed it was a good sign... well, no sign of it. Is a very long file so have not posted it. If needed I will of course gladly post it.
    went to gnome.pp, put in the *99# number, the init lines, the dns (all based on the information gathered here and other places).. still no luck modem not found....
    started the Phone Partner software, again entered all the details as explained in many posts. The connect still greyoout, Manua netwprk selection greyed out as well

    There are posts suggesting to use the vendor id and product Id (in my case 0x12d1 and 0x1033).I copy and paste the commend line to make sure of no error, replace the IDs with mine... bash! some fatal error.....
    Someone suggested unsintalling Linux and installing windows XP instead... but apart from the connection issue I actually enjoy this linux OS and leaning new things... with the nice weather comig I'd love to take my acer in the park and surf!
    If...big if.. i did the windows xp swap... will any xp disc will do (put on a usb key if i understood well).
    any help in real plain english for a newbie like we would be welcome.

    Does it show up as a cdrom first?
    Did you 'eject' that ?
    You only have to look at the last lines of dmesg, every time you do something, some lines will be added.
    As long as you don't see the lines with /dev/ttyUSB* there is no use in trying any dialling software.

    The trick with the usb-numbers does not work in this configuration.

    Have you connected with a wire and done all possible upgrades ?

    The dongle shows as a removable drive (just below "My Disk", press the green eject button as I have read somewhere (might have been one of your post actually)
    The dmseg files is below (no sign of a usb modem) . I connected via my wireless bt hub, have done all the updates when I first started the netbook (4 days ago) and again today (told I am all up to date)

    Maybe reinstall ??

    ( -If- you reinstall, be very careful with the machine you make the usb-recovery-stick on, make sure the dvd is copied to the stick, and not to a partition on the harddisk !! )

    One more thought: this repetitive pattern in the output of dmesg could 'push away' the messages that we are looking for.

    This should be corrected first. Again: reinstall ?

    Well, the restore procedure involves booting another pc with the restore dvd. Then a small system boots up that gives you very little information. Now it wants to create a restore-usb-stick. What could go wrong there is that it starts to write to the harddisk in that pc and not to the stick.

    Ah Ok, I thought I just needed to connect an external cd drive, put the restore disk in, change the boot sequence on the acer... and off it went...
    would have been too easy!

    well some partial success! restored the system and now phone partner detects the device and i even managed to connect for a few minutes.
    i read somewhere that the "connecting" windows stays on. have experieced the same thing.
    however, more often than not i cannot use the internet... but a bit of progress!
