network appears in the menu. however, when selecting the vodafone connect card for linux driver, it come up with a "device selection" window with the device not recognised, and i'm not sure what if anything to enter in custom device settings. the dongle flashes blue but still not recognised. it still shows as a cd too.

did try that, and i just get this: Another twistd server is running, PID 3285

This could either be a previously started instance of your application or a
different application entirely. To start a new one, either run it in some other
directory, or use the --pidfile and --logfile parameters to avoid clashes.

    no idea what it means!!!

It is really hard to help you without seeing what's going on. I don't remember the settings so I would have to check but I need to know what are the exact questions you are being asked.

If it helps, the modem is both a communication device and a storage device (like a USB drive). The storage holds the driver so that you can install it on a windows PC just by plugging it in. It will therefore always show as a "cd drive". Sadly they don't usually come with Linux drivers!

    hi,
the device selection screen asks for: type (only option is serial), data port device and control port device. no idea what to fill in here and it won't recognise the dongle.

It shouldn't be asking you for those sorts of settings. Maybe on the same screen it also gives you a choice of devices. I have a 160g which is not listed so it was asking for settings but I simply chose a different device on the list.

Your other problem with the error message seems to be the result of you running 2 copies of the driver. It may be that one copy is starting at boot-up which prevents the other copy from accessing and therefore identifying the device when you run it manually.

The easiest option for you will be borrowing external CD/DVD drive and install XP this way. There are some manuals how to install XP of USB PenDrive but always there are some issues...

There are reasons why these machines come with Linux rather than XP. You will need at least 1MB of RAM and a fair amount of storage space to even get XP off the ground.

Provided you have the relevant software licences, the first thing you'll need is a copy of XP with all the drivers for the Aspire One. These can be found on the internet. There is one driver as I recall that you'll have to install afterwards. A version specifically for the One will also strip out the irrelevant stuff that will slow down the machine and waste memory space.

You will need to get yourself an external CD drive for the install. These can be had cheaply from places like EBay.

You should find plenty of guidance on the net on what to do. Don't be disheartened.

If it is new, you can always exchange it for the XP version.

    Good luck.

thanks for all your help. it is really appreciated. i now have a fully functioning acer aspire one with windows xp that works like a dream!! linux seems to have its good points but at the same time i think it requires a lot of effort to get things right.
i tried installing windows xp using a usb stick but didn't have much luck. in the end i rang a microsoft certified engineer who collected my webbook last night and returned it with xp fully installed today! and it only cost £15!!!!!!

i'm sure xp will work well. i am treating my acer aspire one as a webbook so will not be storing too much on it. i bought it to take to germany with me, when i go for 3 months on a foreign exchange. i am a bit lost with linux and even if i'd sorted the initial problems out, i might have problems connecting with the university broadband when i get there.

so anyway, all sorted now. i hate how everything works out of the box on windows and mac operating systems but not on any others! but i'm afraid i had to give in in the end.
