Stumbled accross the Aspire one's at PC world the other day and I think its just what I need for taking to Uni with me. Im not bothered about the space aspect as I can always add an SD card to boost storage. Is the SSD drive better on battery life? I know there is 6 cell batts available but there doesnt seem to be many around at present. Are 2.5 acheivable in everyday use?

    How quiet are they?

    Hi Tom,

I think you just asked some loaded questions. :)

Battery life is an issue with the One's as well as noise factor. I take my One to college with me everyday, and have found it to be invaluable to me. I just have to make sure to get to class early and find a seat by a plug. Alternately, I will pop in the library at my break, surf the interwebs and charge.

Noise factor seems to be a random concern. My One is almost silent, but there are complaints of very noisy Ones out there. There is currently some script being written to silent them. Do a search on the One and fan noise on this forum and you will see what I am talking about.

If you are looking for a bigger battery, I expect they will be out soon, if they are not already. But do realize that a bigger battery will be added weight on your already super light netbook. Do a search here, I think there is a picture up of the 6 cell. Until they can squeeze a 6 cell in the same weight as the One is right now, I'm staying with the 3. I love my shoulder being pain-free more than I hate having to charge more often! :)

Do lots of research, that's how I came to decide on the AAOne. Keep reading the forums and read web reviews. Good luck!

    My opinion.

If you're doing work on the laptop, I don't think it'll matter much on whether choosing SSD or a HDD. If you leave it idle, then go for the SSD (because the HDD needs to keep spinning no matter the activity.). The OS will still access the page file once in a while as well.

The fan that jolly mentioned regards to the CPU, so you could save power by shutting it off.

I think the 6 cell battery will make a big difference though, if it was an option.

ive gone for the base model in the end as it best suited my needs and was cheaper. Will a 16gb sdhc card go in and work in the expansion slot?

My track pad doesnt seem to work very well either? is this normal, ive been using a mouse since I got it and then my sister tried using it and couldnt get it to work.

There are two diferent SSDs shipped inside the AA1, and according to macles, see figure in http://macles.blogspot.com/2008/08/upgrading-disk-space-on-acer-aspire-one.html,
they are very different in idle and sleep state (and no so much reading and writting). The Samsung one is very power hungry (in sleep mode it even wastes more power than the HDDs), while the Intel one is not at all. So if you want more time on batteries, go for the Intel SSD.
