IS there any software equivelant to what they use in an in lab service to help restore data or any loopholes i.e. ways of getting that service at consumer prices ?

Depends on what you are thinking they do in-lab.
Sometimes, they have to dismantle the drive and put the platter(s) onto a different setup to get the data off. Obviously, this is something you can't emulate in software, when there is a hardware failure.
Otherwise, I've found that programs like GetDataBack or Ontrack's Easy Recovery Pro are the best that I have used.

You could obtain a copy of Active Undelete from the internet. It works better than getdataback or the ontrack option and it's also much faster in data recovery.

If you don't want a legal copy of active undelete, you'll have to pay approximately $50 for a single license.
