I have recently bought a USB VoIP phone for use with PC and hopefully, laptop. I have successfully installed software (it came with Skype CD and I had to download Skypemate) and set up a Skype account on Windows PC.

On my laptop I have successfully downloaded and installed Skype and set it up for use but the USB phone is not recognised i.e. I have to speak into mic and listen on speakers so I have downloaded Skypemate for Linux (from Yeahlink http://www.yealink.com/skypemate/support.htm ) which I have tried to install but cannot. They have a manual but it is confusing (I am newbie):

Insert SkypeMate installation CD or download SkypeMate software.
    Install SkypeMate
Please login as "root". (Note:If not, please run: # su –)
    # chmod 700 install-SkypeMate
    #./install-SkypeMate

I have logged in OK (I think) using password to get to Add/Remove software but that is no good. I have tried using the commands in Terminal but again without success. Is there anybody out there who can give me some advice?
