Hi Crobber I have an ACer Aspire One zg5 and Ubuntu 10.04 works just fine on mine.
Download it from the web and burn it to disk as an iso image turn your laptop off insert disk and away you go.

I have an Acer Aspire 3050. It had Windows Vista on it. I did not like it. I installed Fubunto onto it; from a Linux User magazine CD. It works great.

Before you even try to install Ubuntu on your Acer make sure you have created a set of Acer Recovery disks, for which you will need an external DVD drive. Should anything go wrong with installing Ubuntu or you do not like it, then at least you can restore your Acer back to it's original condition. Ubuntu does have a USB version, providing your Acer can boot from a USB drive.

As a Linux-lover myself I can tell you it's extremely important to walk into this with your eyes open. I have lost count of the stories of people who slap in a Linux CD, something goes wrong and as a result they conclude "Linux sucks".

Acers tend to work pretty well with Linux by all accounts, but much will depend on the model and, as a result, it's hardware. For example, if it has a "Winmodem" don't expect that to work at all.

A good starting point is here:

    http://www.linux-on-laptops.com/acer.html

The beauty is that you can try this with no risk at all because most distros can be run on a "live" basis (try before you don't buy). There is some very useful info on creating a live USB stick at the ubuntu website.

    http://www.ubuntu.com/download/help/create-a-usb-stick-on-windows

Assuming no linux experience at all I would say try ubuntu or Mint.

    Hope this helps

IMHO, the full Ubuntu/Mint is too heavy for the AA1 .. PeppermintOS Two is a much better choice.

It's much lighter/faster than Ubuntu, but as it's based on Ubuntu 11.04 it has access to the Ubuntu software repositories, so can easily install anything Ubuntu can.

It's also just as easy as Ubuntu/Mint for Windows users to transition to .. maybe even easier.

There's a tutorial (complete walkthrough) for installing PeppermintOS Two on an AA1here:
    http://linuxforums.org.uk/index.php?topic=9782.0

And if you have any questions or problems, that forum will be happy to help.

Whatever you choose .. Good luck (though you won't need it) :)

I have an Aspire One 722 and am currently running Ubuntu 12.04 dual boot. There are a few issues with this model and Ubuntu but they are fairly well documented. You can use Universal USB Installer to create a bootable live USB to test/install.

Really you need to say exactly which model you have to get better advice.
