I asume the only way to install this is via a external dvd rom .. am I right ? I couldn't find a guide on how to do it with a usb stick without having to run it from osx first.

What is the OSX paritition formatted as? I always get Error 17 ubrecognized partition with this option:
    Code:
    root (hd0,2)
    Using
    Code:
    root (hd0,3)
and then setting running chameleon with the
    Code:
kernel <path to the boot file>
(as per dfiore) works fine though. I'm doing installs with no XP and GUID installed OSX.

I am having some trouble using the guide as described by "zakfontaine" on page 2 here. I installed OS X successfully, however when i installed windows, i got a hal.dll not found error. I used a real disc to install xp. Can anyone help me out. I reformatted the xp partition i originally made into a NTFS, should i have left is and not formatted it? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

So it is possible to add OSX second to XP? I have XP installed right now and want to add OSX without removing XP. Is there a link on this forum on how to add it? Thanks so much!

Is there a way that, installed XP and OSX using darwin loader, erase darwin and only use the windows loader without reformat? Fixboot/Fixmbr will work?
    Thanks

Hi, I was running triple boot xp/vista/macosx until the tinyvista had trouble shutting down since it always froze

so I formatted the vista drive using partition manager

and also made a usb stick bootable, but when I put usb drive into computer "remove disks or other media"

    what is going on?

what are the steps to reinstall. thanks.

I'm fairly new to this whole booter thing, but here's a random question

With my old pc desktop, its a Compaq Persario. they come with a recovery partition and the main partition for windows. but every time at startup, it has its own bootloader, with 3s to press a button to choose a partition or it boots windows. i'm wondering if this boot loader would work with booting OS X as well? My processors is an AMD Sempron with only SSE1, so i can't test this out. anyone else figure it would work?

Really i'm wondering if you could boot OS X from it but it still has Windows as the primary partition to auto boot to.

I have a dual boot XP/ OSX 10.5.5. When I boot up I get the menu:
    Micosoft Windows XP Home Edition
    Mac OS X

When I select Mac Osx I go to a Darwin timed selection screen (5secs)

Is there anyway to skip this screen and go directly to OsX as I have already selected it ?
    Thanks in Advance

    Yes, try editing /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot.plist

Then change "No" to "Yes" under the Quiet Boot setting and it should do the trick.

I was able to successfully set up dual booting between XP and MacOS X using the darwin bootloader, with a minimum of fuss. I used an external USB optical drive and USB hard drive, and a Norton Ghost 2003 boot CD. My AAO came with XP home installed, which I wanted to preserve.

I prepared the external HD by formatting it as FAT32 with MBR partitioning using Apple disk utility. Then I booted the Acer off the Norton CD, and cloned the Acer's main partition to a Ghost disk image on the external disk.

After that, I booted off the iATKOS v5 DVD, and installed OS X as per the instructions given in the '10.5.6 install for dummies' thread, except that at the disk partitioning step before the OS X install, i set the disk to MBR partitioning, with three partitions, one for Mac using HFS+ Journaled, and two in FAT32, one for Windows, and one as a shared data partition. After OS X installe,d i followed the kext etc installation steps in the 'install for dummies' thread, including installing the Voodoo kernel etc.

Then I booted back up with the Norton Ghost disk, and cloned the disk image with my XP install back onto the partition i'd prepared.

That was it. Upon boot, the darwin bootloader can be brought up by pressing any key, and asks which partition I want to boot from. Choosing the Mac partition boots OS X, and choosing the WinXP partition boots Windows. No problems so far!

Thanks to everyone for all the hard work that's gone into getting OS X running on these things!

I am trying to do the same thing, booting off an external USB.

    However with a different configuration.

I am trying to us msiwindosx86

I only have an external USB hard disk

I have 10.5 install DVD retail version

I want to keep the internal 120GB hard drive with XP and Ubunt on it unmolested. I don't want to risk bricking my Aspire One with repartition utility.

    Is this doable?

Notes: I do have a Powerbook G4 with Leopard 10.5.5 on it. I believe this install only installs PPC code not intel. I can do a force install on my external USB hard drive (I can't boot off this install with my G4, which is expected. I haven't tried doing this to force an install with the Intel version. I am not sure its possible. I only mention this to open up other possibilities for workarounds.

I have AAO with XP and 160 gig HD with the following partitions now:

    PQ Service
Acer C: windows xp installed 73 gig NTFS formatted
    F: 71 gig unformatted

I used a partition prgram to resize the windows partition and made a new primary partition from the new extra space.

Is it possible to install OSX to the unformatted partition and be able to dual boot to XP and OSX?

Or do I need to image the XP partition first then delete during the OSX install then put it back afterwards?

I dont have anything that i need on the XP partition so I am not concerned about losing any data, etc.

    Thanks

I use Darwin loader to select OSes.
Before install iATKOS5i, shrink Windows area by EASEUS partition resizer.
After this, boot from some mini-sized Linux from CD-R or USB flash drives, and make a new primary partition with some Linux "fdisk" command.

If you set the partition type as "af", you can see the installable partition from iATKOS5i installer. Also you can keep MBR partition tables, and select OSes by Darwin loader.
I you don't like this, you can change bootloader for ather ones, like grub and so on.

    Thanks.

I finally got tired of trying the multi-boot. I got windows xp and OSX working dual boot but wanted windows 7 on there too and that messed up the OS X partition. There are some good ones online you can buy. I'm going to get one on ebay, make some images of the partitions to restore from and fool around with it, rebuild it if I mess up the boot sectors. We'll see how it goes.

I recently installed iDeneb (my first OSX86 experience and Mac OS X experience). Anyways, I have Windows 7 installed on another partition. Unfortunately, it's bootloader was destroyed - upon selecting Windows 7 in Darwin bootloader, all I get is BOOTMGR is corrupt, press CTRL+ALT+DEL blah blah ... Using Windows 7 disc to repair doesn't work. How can I repair W7 and retain the current bootloader?

set it as active using terminal
    sudo fdisk -e /dev/rdisk0
[enter password and press enter, no chars will come up but it is bing inputted]
flag 2 [if windows is the second partition]
    quit
    y [then enter]
then you should be able to use the win 7 disc to repair it, and then you can use easybcd to add an os x entry to the windows bootloader and use the windows bootloader as default to choose between them...
