I don't think Office 2007 works on the Aspire One's version of Wine, not sure if it runs well on even the newest versions. If you want MS Office, 2003 is a safer bet.

Is WIne a standard AA1 program or do I have to install it?

Can you tell me more about AA1's version of Wine? Does it have one preinstalled, and if so how can I access it? Have a few generic windows / dos programs I would like to run, but don't want to change to an XP O/S to do it if I can avoild it. ;)

I'm not sure if having Wine would suffice.

You need the SERVICE PACKS installed WITH windows before you can use it according to the website. Wine doesn't have service packs.

That's not it. There are other files and other tweaks that you need for microsoft office that don't come with wine. You can try to download them and get them going, but it as a frustrating process that will take days if not weeks. Buy crossover office instead. It is a great product and you purchase supports the wine project.

    1. Open Office 3.0's Calc has a similar solver function, and its own scripting language (StarBASIC).
    2. Codeweavers Crossover. Commercial version of Wine with easy installation scripts that apply various workarounds automatically to make programs work better. Supports Excel 2007 it seems.
    3. Wine 1.0, which can be easily installed through the package manager. Supports Office 2003 well enough, but not 2007 as far as I know.
    4. Download latest Wine sourcecode and compile yourself. Can be done on the Aspire One, though takes a bit of work and several 100 MBs of space. Status of Office 2007 support changes from day to day.

Re: Is WIne a standard AA1 program or do I have to install it?

Check the big readme thread at the top on how to activate the advanced menu and install things with the package manager. I typically use Wine from the command line ("wine file.exe"), but if you search the forums you can find instructions on how to set it up to launch by double clicking on an .exe file in the file manager.

Wine does have very basic DOS support, however in general it's much better to use Dosbox for them. Can be installed with the package manager same as Wine.

Wine can't use, nor does it need, Window's service packs. Wine provides, or at least aims to provide, all the functions of Windows and its service packs by itself.

Indeed - but wine is not developed to the point where it reliably provides the functionality of the service packs yet. Which is probably what chowwuikeun referred to.
